How The Guest Bathroom Wallpaper & The Bedroom Window Addition Look In Reality

Welcome to the 863rd Metamorphosis Monday! I hope you had a fun, relaxing weekend! Before we get into the main part of today’s post, I want to share one small “adjustment” I made to this seating area here in the office, in case you ordered this ottoman and would find it helpful. You may remember that I ordered this charming, scalloped ottoman for this cozy reading area in my office. When I shared it previously, this was how I had the ottoman positioned. A day or two later, a thought popped into my head: how would it look if I turned the ottoman on the diagonal?

I expected rotating it to be a waste of time, but decided to give it a try anyway. Surprisingly, I found that I prefer it this way! It places one side of the ottoman facing toward each chair, making it more usable as an ottoman. Plus, I think it just looks better this way. When using this ottoman in front of a single chair, I would stick with having it face the normal way, but I do love this look for a seating area that’s positioned this way. (Ottoman is available here: Scallop Ratan Ottoman.)

Wallpaper Preview: BNOTP readers have skills! Awesome skills! A month or so ago, I shared this wallpaper that I would like to have installed in the half-bath on the main level. I love this silly, whimsical paper and thought it would be a fun surprise for anyone using that bathroom.

Adam, a wonderful BNOTP reader, shared this image to give me an idea of how the paper would look in that bath. As mentioned in a previous post, the walls below the molding will be painted white, with the possible addition of some type of molding. What a great way to see how this wallpaper would look!

Here’s one more image that Adam created with the area below the molding painted white. Love it! A big thank you to Adam for creating this—it helps so much!

Whimsical Wallpaper for Bathroom

So about that missing window in the master bedroom—if you missed my previous post where I talked more about discovering there used to be a window on this wall in the master bedroom, you can read more about that here: A Shocking Discovery—The Dollhouse Continues To Surprise Me! Last week, the same day I shared that post, Katie, a previous owner who lived in the Dollhouse for many years, generously dropped by Bluprints that she had framed many years ago.

Was This Once a Window

The blueprints clearly show the window that used to occupy this spot upstairs near the chimney.

Bluprints showing missing bedroom window

Without going through everything I shared in that previous post, I have come to realize that the missing window would have lined up exactly on the wall with the ceiling fan. Please keep that in mind as we look at other images in this post.

The other thing I discovered in the four sets of blueprints is that the closets on the right were not originally in that location when the home was built in 1938. They were originally on the other side of the bed, directly across from where they are now.

The only reason I can fathom that they were moved to the right side of the bed is that maybe they were moved when air conditioning was added to the home, because there’s a return/intake vent (barely visible in the photo below) on that side of the room. I did some reading online, and in 1937, when the plans were drawn up for this home, central air conditioning was very rare. Houses had furnaces, but did not normally have air conditioning. This house doesn’t have a large floor furnace vent anywhere, so I guess there were vents in the wall for the heat, but maybe that return vent didn’t exist. Do you only need a return in each room for air conditioning? Why else would the closets that started out on the left side, be moved to the right side of the room?

This is a close-up section of the blueprints for the upstairs bedrooms. That’s the master bedroom on the far left. The blueprints show that the two closets were originally on the left side of the room.

Original Location of closets in Master Bedroom

If I make the changes that I would like to make, the closets would be moved once again, this time over to this corner of the room where there is currently a storage area built into the eaves. I measured, and there appears to be enough room there, so I think that will work.

Using a photo from my previous post, Adam created a quick mockup of how that space would look minus the closets and with the addition of the Palladian window that is similare to what I would like to add above. The original window was around 32 inches wide, so the Palladian window would probably be a bit smaller, but this gives us an idea of how that area would look. Thanks, Adam!

Angie, another lovely BNOTP reader, put ChatGPT to work, and this is what it spit out. I have a four-poster bed that I would be moving here if/when I move here full-time, so Angie had ChatGPT include that. I love how this looks! It makes me want to get this done sooner rather than later!

Adding Palladian Window to Bedroom

The Palladian window shown in the image is probably close to the size I would expect since the original window was around 32 inches in width. What a beautiful focal point this would be for the room! It would be the first thing one would see upon entering the room. I would love the additional light it would bring into the room, and moving the closets would let me have two large, full-size bedside tables on either side of the bed, as I currently have in Georgia. Thanks so much to Angie for creating this! These two examples will give me something to show to a contractor if I decide to go through with this update in the future. So helpful!

  1. Wow, Adam and Angie did some fun stuff there! Both rooms look great. If you move the closets to the left, will you have full-length clearance inside since the closets will be built into the eaves? I have both types in my 1938 closet. It looks as though the older, original closets have always had the full length clearance for hanging clothes, but the upper shelf is slanted. My newer closets are more like cubbies – shorter, head-banging clearance in the deeper ones, and just shelving depth in the more shallow ones (I use for dishes and stemware).

    • That’s how the existing closets are, full size for hanging with a slanted shelf above. I measure their depth/width and to keep the same amount of space, I think the back of the closet wall would have to start out a ways, which would place the closet doors out around where you see that long dark board on the floor, almost to the wall outlet. Maybe they could create a little door in the back of the closet that still would go into the current eave storage since I’d hate to lose that.

When you first talked about removing the closets, I thought, what a lot of work. but when I looked at Angie’s picture, I thought wow! I love it. Are you thinking of adding the 2 side windows? It’s just beautiful! Can’t wait!

    • Thanks, Ellen! Really, the main goal was to be able to have two full-size bedside tables. The previous two owners of this home made do with only one bedside table, on the side away from the closets. I really dislike how that looks and functions, so that was my main goal for moving the closets. Later, I realized the window was missing and thought how nice the extra light would be, but I don’t want a window that goes down behind the bed, so that’s where I got the palladian window idea. So this whole idea has sort of evolved over time.
Do you mean on the walls on either side of the bed? Those windows are already there. There’s a double window on the left side and a window seat (that’s a hidden cedar chest) on the right side. So those are already in place.

      • I was trying to figure out what Ellen meant. I think she said that because as depicted in the second AI version, the windows and window seat appear to be a lot closer to the back wall. When the closets got removed, the window seat got promoted, lol. So it looks like it’s beside the bed, rather than down by the footboard.

I love that wallpaper! It will look great above the trim with the wall being white, below. Very pretty and just plain fun.

These are great ideas for the Dollhouse, Susan. I know you’re probably itching to get these projects underway.

Oh, and yes, the ottomon makes so much sense positioned that way.

Thanks for the inspiration, and have a great week.

  3. Those changes would be amazing and make that bedroom a show stopper!
The last two pictures show the window seat further up in the room on the right but it seems it would not actually be there cemtered across from the bed but start further down near the end of the bed, is that correct? Anyway….what a lovely addition and change that would be. Go for it!

    • Thanks, Toni! Yeah, don’t go by where the AI stuck those windows. Plus, the photo I took used a wide angle lens, so that probably threw things off. The windows are beyond the end of the bed.

  4. I love both ideas and the images make them so clear. I had difficulty picturing the alcove for the bed, but now I get it! It is lovely. Adam and Angie have tech talent putting those descriptions to visuals. I look forward to seeing the changes to the Dollhouse.

  5. Everyone has a thought, right? FWIW, just from those two pics so graciously shared by Adam, I kind of like the brighter paint color below the railing more so than white. It balances the boldness of the paper better and makes the white molding pop. But then maybe you will add more color with towels and accessories so then I could see the white working, too. As far as the bedroom changes, LOVE IT! Go for it….full speed ahead. (Said by someone whose time, money and aggravation will be not involved.) LOL!!!

  6. Susan,
I love the redition of the 4 poster bed and the pallidium window…Really pretty!!
Thanks so much for hosting this charming party!!! I truly do appreciate it as I do know the time involved with it….I hope you and your family are well and enjoying your week!

  7. O, kiddo!!! THESE CHANGES TO CURRENT LAY OUT ARE…MARVELOUS!!! Can’t tell you how much I love your vision…DO IT…SOONER THAN LATER!! franki

    • Thanks so much, Franki! Unfortunately, I have some rather expensive landscaping to do, I need to share that soon. But I can’t wait to work on the bedroom!

  8. Those ‘preview’ images are so helpful envisioning how the rooms would look. The wallpaper is even more fun when shown on the walls. And how creative to use the other corner across the room for a closet. As for the ottoman, on the diagonal and with the two chairs, makes it feel more of a group rather than just 3 pieces. I’m for doing the palladium window first…just in case you are taking a vote

  9. Christy Keyton says

That image is simply beautiful! Can’t wait to see you do that!

  10. The AI rendition looks great. Any idea how much it would cost to put that window in? Why do you think they blocked it in originally ? Have you tried the fireplaces or had them cleaned ? When do we see the improved back yard ? So many questions, so much money with wings flying around. We armchair experts are anxious to spend your money.
It’s so hot and the start of school mentally makes us think fall is soon. Not here. Hot, humid, and more rain.

    • No, not sure. I’m working on estimates for the backyard now. May have to wait until spring, it’s hard to find companies that are not backed up here.

  11. Interesting placement of closets. Was a bed always set up in the alcove? It seems so awkward and off center and understand why you want to change out the closet. I just love the blue in the room. Love the idea of the new window! In the bathroom the wallpaper is so fun for a powder room. And, painting below the paper white will hide that little door. I would not use a knob and make it magnetic so it “disappears”! lol So many ideas, you’re going to be really busy sooner than later!!

  12. Michele M. says

I love those mock-ups – sure helps envision things beautifully. That was VERY thoughtful of them to do that for you – and for you to share with us!!! The bedroom looks so good like that. Hope you can do it soon, it’s amazingly perfect.

  13. Linda Gurganus says

I absolutely love the picture Angie made with the 4 poster bed and Palladium window. It’s perfect! It’s so great that Adam and Angie could design these pictures for you. I love how the wallpaper looks in the bathroom picture. Everything is turning out perfect for you.

  14. I would put the seating area the two chairs and ottoman where your bed is now put the bed under the two windows on the left wall. Just an idea! That way your bed isn’t facing the door.

    • Unfortunately, that area under the window isn’t wide enough for a bed. I don’t even think a regular/full size bed wood fit and definitely not a queen, which is he size of my bed. The previous two owners placed their dresser there. I just purchased a dresser and that what is there now. I’ll share that in a post sometime soon.
Regarding the seating area, I really like having that reading area in the office and use it a lot, so wouldn’t want to move it, but thanks for those suggestions.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
