Welcome to 825th Metamorphosis Monday! Hope you had a wonderful weekend! I have two updates to share here in the office, one I wish I had done ages ago. When I first chose furniture pieces from Pottery Barn’s Bedford Modular Collection for my home office, as soon as they were delivered, I had a local glass company out to my home to measure the tops so protective glass could be cut to the exact dimensions of the Bedford corner desk surface and its surrounding cabinets/units. This whole desk arrangement is comprised of a large corner desk section, flanked by three cabinets on either side. Back in the day, PB used to have customer reviews for each of the products on their website, not sure why they don’t do that anymore. Anyway, one of the common complaints I used to see about the Bedford line of furniture was how easy it was to scratch, thus the reason I went to the expense to have glass cut for the top of each section.
In this photo from many years back, the greenish-colored edge of the glass can be seen behind the chair. If I were buying this furniture again today, I would not waste money having glass cut for the tops of the cabinets. The glass did offer a certain amount of protection, but it created other issues that I really didn’t like, the main one being how trash/dust/dirt would collect in between the individual glass sections. (Note the seam/gap between two of those glass sections in the photo below.) Those gaps looked unsightly and were very difficult to clean out, even using a vacuum. To clean in between each glass section, everything on the entire desk would have to be removed and the heavy glass would have to be moved, sometimes completely off the desk. Another issue I had was with the large glass on the large center desk section. It had slowly worked its way backward about a 1/2 inch over the years, and there was no easy way to slide it forward where it belonged since a large Bedford organizer/riser and three monitors sat atop it. Argggh!
Having just purchased a desk for the office in the Dollhouse, I have really enjoyed having a desk without a protective glass top. They aren’t as difficult to keep looking great as one might expect.
So this weekend, with great effort, I removed all the heavy glass sections from the top of all of the Bedford units.
It’s a joy to see the surface completely uncovered. I’ve taken reasonable precautions to protect the top of the desk. Actually, I did that long ago when I first purchased the desk. The rotating pencil organizer, and the other organizers that I use on the desk, all have little protective pads underneath. If the surface gets a few scratches in the years to come, I can live with that.
So happy to no longer have to see or deal with dust/trash collecting in between the various sections of glass covering each of the Bedford units.
Here’s another spot where two glass seams used to come together and where dirt/grime would collect. It was impossible to keep those gaps clean.
Pretty much everything on my desk has the little protective pads underneath, but I noticed this lamp did not.
I found these felt lamp base pads online in various sizes that can be cut to the exact size needed. They were super easy to cut and apply. I placed the lamp on top of one of the pads and traced around it with a pencil.
Next, I cut out the felt circle out which was super easy to do.
I peeled off the protective paper to reveal the sticky side of the felt and pressed it against the bottom of the lamp. Using scissors, I trimmed off the teenest amount along one edge for a perfect fit. This protective felt for lamp bases can be purchased here: Lamp Base Protective Felt.
It looks great and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I have one more lamp in the office for which I need to purchase a protective felt pad. It’s a square lamp base and slightly too large for the pads that I purchased…I should have bought them a couple of inches bigger.
The local mirror and glass company that I used when I added a mirror to my dressing room closet door a few years back, just picked up the large glass sections this morning to take them back to their shop for recycling. I love the clean look of the desk so much without the glass!
Before I close this post, in shopping online for gifts this weekend, I noticed the Lego Home Alone House is currently back in stock. If you’ve always wanted to collect or gift this Home Alone Lego Kit, it’s back! I purchased it for myself a couple of years back, and again for my grandsons last year. It has to be one of the most incredible builds Lego has ever created. It was so much fun, and can actually be played with once it’s finished! It has so many cool features that move and turn, and a lot of hidden “Easter Eggs.” Love that! I wish I was just starting it again for the first time this year.
I created a very detailed post about this awesome Lego design—you’ll find that post here: Putting Together The Home Alone Lego House. Can’t recommend it enough for the Lego fan or the Home Alone movie fan! The Home Alone Lego Set is available here: Lego MaCallisters’ House.
Another one of my favorites for Christmas is back this year—the adorable “Christmas Vacation” wrapping paper that I used in the past to wrap Christmases gifts. I just purchased a few more rolls since I’m planning on using it again this year.
The rolls are generously sized rolls with a lot of paper on each roll. This fun paper is available here: Christmas Vacation Wrapping Paper. I’ll be sharing some fun gift ideas later this week! Are you busy preparing your home for the holidays?

“TaDaa!!!!” WAY!!! ❤️
franki hi
Way! 😉
Susan –
I too had done the glass on top of a corner desk I had purchased (not PB – but an oak one.) and I further complicated my cleaning by putting photos and other bits of paper underneath that were useful – kind of like a bulletin board – but under the glass…. needless to say – all that has been gone for several years…. in short – I hear you! the glass tops are not as useful as one might think.
So true! It seemed like a great idea, but didn’t know the pitfalls until I lived with it. Thanks, Maggie!
Hi i love your blog- and i would love to do the Home Alone house but at $300, no i won’t…hahahha. if i may ask, what is the name/color of the Dollhouse office paint? i love that color. Thank you, your house’s are an inspiration as to what i would like to do with my own….going to work on my office over the holidays when i have 2 weeks off work. Thank you! Look forward to the next issue.
Have a wonderful day.
How great that the glass company picked up the glass from you! For recycling!
Yes! They are an awesome company, always helpful!
Big change accomplished! I know you are very excited not to have to worry about that dusty glass anymore!
Yes, for sure! Thanks, Jenna! Hope you’re having a great November!
Susan
I love the desk without glass.
It is not like you are letting your grandkids do art work on there, and you are certainly careful Iam sure.
lol Very true! I do try to be careful. After I got rid of the glass, I thought to myself, having glass on my desk was a little like putting those plastic covers over your sofa and chairs. Remember when people did that back in the day? We just need to enjoy the things we buy and not worry so much about keeping them pristine.
Your desk looks great without the glass and I’m sure it’s more fun to use too, not to mention easier to clean! Good choice, and so great that you found a way to recycle. I remember when you got the Home Alone house – that was really fun. The case makes it a true work of art! Thanks for sharing all the goodies, and for hosting the party! Take care till next time!
Susan,
Love the home alone Lego set but I can not even imagine trying to build it!!! Kudos to those who do!!!
Thanks so much for hosting this wonderful party!! I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into it along with visiting all the links!! I hope you are having a great week!!
Hugs,
Deb
