Welcome to the 849th Metamorphosis Monday! Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend! Over the past few days, I’ve been working on completing the last of the projects here in the Dollhouse basement. I’m very close now to reaching the point where I feel like the room is done—it just needs a couple of more additions.
You may recall from a recent post that the room has looked like this for around 8-9 months, with little to no updates since I added this modular sofa to this space. The previous two owners of my home had left behind an old TV/sound system that needed to be updated.
Last week, I shared some new additions to this space, including a round end table, and a new TV with a console below for storage. Geek Squad took away the old TV, and I donated all the outdated electronics to Goodwill.
When I last shared this space, I mentioned that I needed some wall decor to go underneath the small window in this room. Also, I had plans to replace the Back to the Future movie poster with one that was the same height/width as the Harry Potter movie poster on the opposite side. Plus, I needed a way to block out the light from the window on that wall since it’s directly opposite the TV. So, how do things look now?
Very different! I added black, velvet curtains/drapes to the problem wall, which, happily, ended up solving a few other issues. The light through the small window is no longer a problem when watching TV, and the drapery created a nice backdrop for the sofa. I moved the posters over, and I really like how they look behind the lamp(s). I say lamps because there will eventually be a lamp on the other end table, another addition since I last shared this room. (Velvet Blackout Drapery/Curtains are on sale in 10 colors here: Velvet Curtains.)
Now the two movie posters match exactly in size. I like how the end table on this side helps hide the Sonos subwoofer. (Side/end tables are available in several finishes here: End Table. Love the tables, and the price is awesome for such a solid, heavy table. When I initially hung the velvet drapes, the mounting hardware was visible. I liked the end of the rod showing, but I didn’t like seeing the screws of the metal support that held the rod to the wall.
So I ended up pulling the drapery around the end of the rod. That hid the ugly rod support/screws.
Here’s a picture of the other side of the window that better shows how that looks. (Movie posters are available here: Movie Posters.)
Adding drapes behind the window solved several other issues for that wall. Besides just blocking the light that was annoyingly shining on the TV, the drapery took care of the need for more art/decor for that wall. They also softly filled the gap behind the sofa that is needed since the back of each section of the sofa is designed to tilt back for added comfort. (Sofa is available here: Modular Sofa in 4 Colors and Multiple Sizes/Configurations.) The drapes also add a bit of “theater drama” to this room. My son, DIL, and grandsons came over on Saturday evening for our first movie night. We watched the movie, Secretariat, briefly stopping long enough to watch the Kentucky Derby race.
The Console: Shopping for baskets for the console has been a bit frustrating. I knew finding the right size would be a challenge. I visited Hobby Lobby, but they didn’t have a lot of baskets in stock, and nothing was close to the size I needed. I ended up back on Amazon, and these were the ones that I ordered to try out.
I wouldn’t mind if they were an inch wider, but at least they are close to the size I wanted. Which style of basket do you like best? I’ve been leaning toward the one on the right that is made of seagrass. I like the one on the left that’s made of water hyacinth and seagrass, but the water hyacinth is a bit orangey in person, and there’s nothing else in the room that’s orange in color. It probably doesn’t look like it in this photo, but the top of the console is brown. That’s more visible in earlier photos in this post. (Seagrass Baskets are available here: Seagrass Baskets. Water Hyacinth and Seagrass Baskets are available here: Water Hyacinth & Seagrass Baskets.)
The seagrass basket is less busy and kinda blends in, which I do like. I don’t want to draw attention to the baskets; I just want them to blend in and work for storage. I plan to use baskets in the five openings in the center part of the console. I hope to place the surge protector inside one of the baskets so it isn’t visible. It could go behind the console but it would be a pain to reach when needed. I think it will fit in a basket with the cords going out through a side opening in the basket. The only opening that won’t have a basket is the one where the DVD player lives.
Update: Almost forgot to mention this other small addition—I added a remote holder that also does double duty as a tissue holder. It’s visible on the console in the picture above. (Remote/Tissue holder is available here: Remote/Tissue Holder.)
Which basket do you like best? I’ve asked a few friends and family, and the decision was split. I’ve ordered 4 more seagrass baskets (the one on the right) to see how those look. They will be arriving today. I can still change my mind and return those, though. So let me know which style of basket you like best, X 5.
Another update: I managed to get the super-heavy, metal TV mounts off the wall above the fireplace.
I don’t have my large tool chest here at the Dollhouse, so the tools I have available are limited. This channel lock wrench that I bought several months back was the only thing I had to unscrew the gigantic bolts holding the metal supports. It was a slow process that got faster as I went. I was so happy to see those large metal supports off the wall!
Since all my painting supplies are in Georgia, I ordered this neat kit that had almost everything I needed. (Kit is available here: Painting Supplies Kit.) After watching a video on how to repair a golf-ball-sized hole in a wall, I purchased drywall joint tape, spackle, and a putty knife. I thought I would need joint compound, but after watching THIS video, I went with spackle since it is less likely to shrink as much and crack.
Here’s how the mesh tape looked over the large hole where the TV used to be mounted over the fireplace. I wish they had saved the circle they cut out.
I’ve started the process of spackling over the large bolt holes and the large hole that I covered with the mesh drywall tape. I need to do a second application today. I like this spackle because it starts out bright pink, then turns white as it dries. It was starting to dry in this photo below. I found a can of paint marked “Basement” that I hope is the paint I need for this area above the fireplace. Hopefully, it’s still good. At least the formula is on the can in case I need to have more mixed up.
I’ve ordered something really fun to go on that wall above the fireplace—more on that soon! So I want to get that wall fully repaired and painted before it arrives.
Another item(s) that I ordered for the movie room is this movie tray set that includes containers for snacks and such. I ordered the reusable glasses separately. The lids feel very secure when snapped into place, so hopefully those will help with spills. (Plastic glasses with lids are available here: Glasses with Lids and Straws.)
This popcorn machine is arriving today. I have been eyeing it for a few months and finally decided to go for it. The reviews look pretty good with 4.5 stars after 7,629 reviews. When not in use, it will add some fun ambiance to the room. (Popcorn Machine is available here: Floor-Standing Popcorn Maker.)
So there will be at least one more update post for the movie room. I can’t wait to share these final touches with you! I need to drive back to Georgia and get one of the lamps that I have in storage in my basement for the other end table. Ha!

I think the baskets are the perfect size, and I definitely prefer the one on the right.
Thanks for that vote, Pattie!

What a great room that is going to be for watching movies with your family. LOVE the velvet drapes…and glad you got rid of the old electronics. I was happy to see our Goodwill is not taking TVs. Have an old one in the spare room that needs an upgrade so happy to know I can donate it. Love all the extras you are adding to the room – enjoy!
I know, a lot of organizations don’t take the older TVs. I guess it’s because they have trouble selling them once they are a certain age. Thanks so much, Ann! It’s been fun putting this room together.
You are the best, Mother, MIL and Grandmother ever! Your movie room is just amazing. Very tastefully decorated and comfy. The popcorn machine and movie trays are just fabulous. Your family must love coming over for movie night, I know I would. You did a wonderful job creating your movie room.
Thanks so much, Linda—appreciate that so much! The popcorn machine arrived today and it was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever put together, but it’s all done and ready for business. 🙂
I prefer the basket on the left.
Thanks, Carol!

The room looks great – I love how much thought you always put into your processes! I vote the seagrass basket on the right. The other one (2-toned) is distracting.
Thanks, Leslie—appreciate that feedback!

Love what you’ve done to the room! However, I think the sofa needs some cushy accent pillows and orange would be fun! And also, a couple of throws for cooler weather. Definitely prefer the basket on the right as the texture is minimal and won’t distract from the TV.
I ordered some fun movie-themed pillows, but when they arrived, they felt too scratchy, so they had to go back. I agree…def need some more pillows! I have three throws so far in the room, but you can never have too many!
Thanks, Judy!
The room is looking great! I like the water hyacinth and seagrass baskets; they reflect the variations of color of the wood.
Thanks, Linda!

What a fun room Susan – I can see wonderful times with your family in there. Popcorn too – what a fabulous grandma! I’m voting for the seagrass baskets. Good luck with the spackling and painting – your room gets better every week. Thanks so much for hosting!!
Thanks so much, Barbara! I wish I enjoyed painting, but it’s not fave pasttime. lol But I need to get that wall ready pronto.
It’s looking very cozy and inviting.
I think the simpler basket on the right looks better.
Thanks, Diana!

Wow….what a fun place to watch movies! Everything is perfect. I just hope the large gray chairs aren’t too close to the TV for little eyes as I assume that is where the grandsons will sit. PS: I like the baskets on the left….I like the lighter color but whatever you decide on will be perfect I’m sure. Great job on the whole room.
I was worried about that, too. My grandsons insist they are not too close and my DIL likes them. She sat in one with my youngest grandson for part of the movie we watched. They are a bit closer than I would want to sit, but my grandsons are obsessed with them. They are the first place they head to in that room, even when the sofa is completely open. After a bit of arguing over who gets which one, they have finally settled on which is theirs. lol
I like the basket on the right- the plainer one. With five baskets, the patterned one will be a lot going on! Looks great and this whole process is making me want to turn our garage into a movie room!!
Thanks, Christy! I was worried about that…def don’t want any distractions since the focus needs to be on the movie.
Go for it! I bet you would love it!
Definitely the basket on the right……and the popcorn machine….yeah!!!!
🙂 The popcorn machine arrived today and it was a bear to put together by myself, but I managed to get it done. I’ll have to share it in post real soon. Thanks, Theresa!
Those black drapes are genius! What a great solution for light control and ambiance. The seagrass basket seems much sturdier and I feel that multiples would look tidier than the hyacinth one. A popcorn machine…you’ve gone all out for this room. Loved Secretariat movie; old enough to have watched him win the triple crown. What a story.
Thanks so much, Mia! I was telling my son that I was in highschool when Secretariat won the Triple Crown. I didn’t see the race but oh my gosh, that’s all I heard about for years afterward. Everyone was talking about that race for a long, long time. Now I understand why, what an amazing horse! His record still stands all these years later, no horse has ever broken it! That’s awesome that you saw it when it happened!
I think the seagrass basket looks the best. The other is distracting now and, when you add more baskets, pillows, etc., there is enough going on w/o adding the two-color basket. Would you consider all-white baskets? I don’t know if I would like them but it might be an additional option.
Thanks, Nicki! Unfortunately, that basket isn’t offered in white, and those two by the same company were the only ones I could find that were a great size for the console openings. That’s a great idea, though!
It is looking great. Love the curtains and the new sofa placement. Being a fan of black I would like black baskets. We built a little home theatre in our lower level when we finished it 30 years ago. No windows in that room and we painted it dark charcoal with some flecks of color that barely show, including the ceiling, and charcoal carpet. Some sconces on the walls that dim. black console for the equipment. I can say it is my favorite place and I spend a lot of afternoons and some evenings there.
That sounds amazing and very much like a real theatre! I can see how a black console would be perfect. I was tempted to purchase the end tables in black but I wanted to create a little contrast here and there. This room is so completely different from any room I’ve ever decorated, so it’s a stretch for me…all these dark colors. But it just seems right for watching movies. Your home theatre sounds amazing, Jillian! What are your favorite types of movies? I’m super limited since I don’t like anything sad, scary or with any violence. That only leaves comedies and romances that have happy endings. I just subscribed to the Hallmark channel not too long ago, and though the movies can be a bit corny, I finally found movies that I can enjoy that don’t stress me out.
I am especially fond of Masterpiece/Brit box/Acorn Tv. The English shows taking place in the countryside are beautiful and calm if sometimes a little predictable. I like detective shows, nature series, and ones such as Foyles War, Father Brown, MidSommer Murders. I do not like scary films, gory ones, westerns, or really suspenseful things. Oddly, I love films like The Beekeeper, The Equalizer and Peppermint with Jennifer Gardner where the villains get their due. I used to watch some Hallmark, especially the Christmas ones because of the cheer, but grew tired of the cliched- always- the- same plot. There is one series I really loved called Signed, Sealed and Delivered. Many things on Apple TV as well. I used to like some romances, but again, cliched and predictable. I’m with you on the really sad things too. I didn’t watch much TV for years but now that we are older I actually really enjoy going down to the dark room and catching up on many things. You will have many fun times in your new space with your family. So wonderful.
I love what you have done with the movie room. I hope you have many hours with your family watching fun movies. Now to find some good movies to watch. Enjoy!
Thanks so much, Lin! Yes, that’s always the challenge for me.
WOW – looking like the perfect media room, Susan. Love all your decisions and agree with every one of them. I vote right basket – it’s kinda perfect for all your reasons. How exciting you’ll have a popcorn making machine just like at the movies. Whoo hoo. Those boys are going to never leave! (Bet that’s all the reasons, right??) Well done.
Thanks so much, Michele! I just put the popcorn machine together and wow, it was more challenging than just about anything I’ve built. The photos in the instructions were minuscule. I had to take photos with my phone and then enlarge them to be able to see anything. And I’m super near-sighted so I normally don’t have that issue. But it’s together and ready to go!
LOL Yeah, I joke about creating ways to lure them over! Ha!
PS my niece went to Derby the other day – sure wish the weather was better lately – this rain is getting old.
I know! I was worried a horse would slip in all that mud, but I guess they run no matter the track conditions. I’m so glad none of the horses fell.
Your black velvet drapes will be great for the acoustics in your room.
Rebecca, I think you are so right! It’s funny because I didn’t notice a big change when I added the sofa. I noticed a bit more change when I added the chairs…but now that I have the velvet curtains up, the room sounds so different. You can really tell the difference just while talking. It’s so interesting how that works!
Your movie room is really coming along. Can’t wait to see it finished. I like the basket on the right.
Thanks so much, Deborah! That one seems to be the winner, for sure.
Wow, your cool movie night cove is looking great! If you’re building your DVD collection or just looking for a weekly feature to check out, your local library could be a great, inexpensive resource. I live in a small town and our library has a decent selection of DVDs/Blu-rays from recent years and a handful of new arrivals to borrow. But the big find is the book sale room where they sell books and DVDs donated by people in town or that the library no longer needs, and you can buy what you need for a small donation of fifty cents to a dollar per item. I found the last two Harry Potter movies there last year when I was reading and watching the series.
Thanks, Jill! That’s a great idea! I joined the library a few months but haven’t had time to visit again. I will check to see what they have available. I wonder if they ever have book sales. I used to go to those all the time…love them!
Wow, good job scoring those Harry Potter movies! I know those are always in demand!
What a wonderful room to share family movie nights!!! Looking forward to seeing what will go over the fireplace. I prefer the seagrass basket on the right – blends in nicely with the top of the console.
Thanks so much, Cynthia! Looking forward to sharing that soon!
Those black curtains are da bomb!!! What a win/ win on that one! Friends have that same “Popcorn Machine” in their movie room. Way cute. That room is an “Oscar Winner!!!” franki
Thanks so much, Franki! It’s such a cute machine, even has room for “concessions.” Ha!
Looking good and I’m sure your grandsons’ love it! I like the basket on the right best.
Thanks, Karen! They def seem to. 🙂
The popcorn machine is fun but cleanng it is NOT a pleasure. I’d send it back and get a microwave!
I thought that, too, but then I read a rather lengthy review on the machine where they said it’s really not that bad to clean. In the review, she mentioned they usually clean it out every 4-5 uses, and it takes around 15 minutes. I’ll have to report back after I’ve used it a few times.
Susan,
I just love this media room!!
Thanks so much for hosting this wonderful party!! I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into it along with visiting all the links!! I hope you are having a great week!!
Hugs,
Deb

Mom’s nursing home and the local Ace hardware has those popcorn machines. They don’t put butter on the popcorn but it’s still delicious. I love all kinds of movies but didn’t see you mention Nature series. I love anything with Sir Attenborough narrating it. I also love murder mysteries and many are cozy (not gory). I especially like Poirot with David Suchet, Murder She Wrote, Columbo. I always loved going to one Aunt’s house-she served up hard ice cream from a box. Funny how so many fun times with family & friends center around food but it does make it more fun and memorable. Lots of memories to come from time spent in the media room
I vote for the basket on the right. Less distracting.
What an amazing room, Susan! It is all coming together so well. How nice that you will be creating many memories with your grandsons in this media room. I agree with you, I like the seagrass baskets because they are less obvious.
