Office Additions

Welcome to the 140th Metamorphosis Monday!

I headed over to Marshalls to see what fun Halloween/fall goodies they had gotten in.  I found a few things I had been hoping to find for the office.

I’ve had some ideas brewing in my head about how I might decorate the wall space above the sitting area in this room.  I had envisioned a mirror above the chest.  I love, love, love mirrors and have used them in pretty much every room of my home.  I really like how they brighten a space and reflect the available light.  A mirror above the chest would reflect the light coming in through the double windows, as well as the view and greenery of the trees.

While in Marshall’s today, I found this mirror.   It has a silver-ish frame, which was exactly what I wanted since the cabinetry in this room has silver handles and the knobs on the chest are sort of a rubbed-oil bronze with a silvery look.  The mirror is beveled and really pretty.   The price was amazing…on sale for only $20!

Unfortunately, the mirror is just a bit too wide.  When I arrived home, I measured the chest and it’s 28″ wide.  The mirror is 29″ wide.  Drat.  It really needs to be a bit smaller than the chest to look right and not overwhelm it.

I looked around to see if I could use it somewhere else…such an awesome price for such a large mirror.  But I really don’t have another great spot for it, so I guess it will be going back.  But, maybe not.  In addition to being very mature and adult today, I’m also very decisive. 😉

The other item I’ve been thinking about using somewhere in the office is a large wall clock.  The only available wall space is here on this wall, so I’ve been envisioning hanging a large clock and making it part of a whole wall arrangement of some type…adding some pictures or something else to the space.  The clock was just $29…not bad for one this large.

I like the Roman numerals, the aged/weathered look and the sage-green color around the outer edge.

Hard to see the greenish color in these photos.  It looks great with the chair and the black lettering works well with the bee pillow and the black stand on the dress form.

The minute hand has a cute fleur-de-lis decoration on the end…perfect for my French bee motif here in the office.  Not sure if I’ll keep the clock, but I’m thinking about it.  And in case you’re wondering, the clock is too large to go over the chest, too.  Besides, I really do want a mirror over the chest.

The third little addition to the office is this little step stool.  The white dots are non-slip thingies.  Cute, aren’t they?

It was marked down to just $6.

It’s only nine inches high, but it will be perfect for helping me reach books on the top shelf of my little office library.  I can get them down now, but I have to realllllly stretch on tiptoes to do so.

The best part is, it folds completely flat when you lift up on the handle in the center of the step.  I’ll just keep it tucked behind the door.  I have the door pulled back a little in this pic so you can see it leaning against the wall.  The door will normally be further back so it won’t be visible at all when it’s not in use.  I like that.

Anyone have a mirror shrinking machine?  I think I’ll end up keeping it…may come in handy for a future bath renovation.

Lovely additions, Susan! I especially love the French clock! Happy week!…hugs…Debbie

  4. I loved your way of handling stress – sugar and fries! You are definitely a kindred spirit! (I would have probably gotten the hot fudge sundae although there really isn't any fudge involved!)

  5. Terrific deals! It stinks that the mirror is too big, because that's an amazing price for one so large. Love the clock! Thanks for sharing.

  6. Don't you just love a good Marshall's bargain. The clock is great and you'll find the perfect sized mirror for the dresser. My neighbor just went through 8 before she found the right one!
    Marianne 🙂

  7. Linda (Nina's Nest) says

Susan, the clock is wonderful! The mirror certainly is a great deal! Wish you could shrink it. Linda

  8. Jena @ Involving Color says

Susan, I bought that same step stool in black from Crate and Barrel Outlet awhile back. You got a great deal on it! Thanks so much for hosting such a great party!

  9. ℳartina @ Northern Nesting says

Great finds Susan! Love that clock and the mirror is perfect for over that cabinet. Love your pretty silver lamp too! Martina

  10. Oh that's too bad the mirror is too big, Susan. It looks so pretty. Love the clock and step stool too…Christine

  12. Hi Susan,
Thanks for hosting! I LOVE your office. It's been so fun to follow this transformation. I love it all! XO ~Liz

  13. Pam@OurAdventuresInHomeImprovement says

What a great find on that mirror Susan. Are you positive that it won't work? I would imagine that 1" wouldn't be that noticeable… I love the clock too!

Thank you for hosting Met Monday! I love participating and love visiting all of the other creative people's blogs.

    Have a great week!
    Pam

  14. Heading right to the food always makes me feel better:-) I love that clock and the mirror too. I'm thinking that after you removed those bulky protective corners it would fit in just right.

  15. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Pam, I'm thinking about hanging it until I find something I like better. It really doesn't look that bad. I can probably find another spot for it later if I find a mirror down the road that fits a bit better.

  16. Susan, I love your taste and I've been a big fan of your site for a long time. You always have fun and beautiful things to show.

And thanks for hosting this blogparty.

  17. Love the way your offie came out and that mirror is AWESOME, what a steal too.

It goes so well there how about placing it in between the chest and chair, then you could add other thingsaround it ???

What ever you decide will be great that's for sure…..

  18. Liz @ the Brambleberry Cottage says

I LOVE shopping at Marshall's! They always have the BEST goodies to choose from. I bet you could find just the right size mirror if you took that one to a different Marshall's. And you know they get new merchandise often. By the way, I love your mannequin, Susan.

    Thanks for hosting.

  19. sharonavinger says

Susan, have you considered moving the chair over by the door and angling it into the room a little. Then put the chest next to it and hang the mirror horizontal (across) rather than vertical. I think it would look fine hung vertically, too. If you do it this way, you might have to move the dress form. Just a thought. Good luck!

  20. I think that mirror looks great, and I wouldn't take it back. A half inch over on each side is barely noticeable. When you remove the cardboard, it will not look that large. Glad you had a good shopping trip!

  21. I love the clock and am sure the right mirror will find you! What does your son think of his old room? Quite a change, and it's been so much fun to watch the transformation!

  22. Kelli @ The Turquoise Piano says

Thanks for hosting! I love your blog and I'm happy you got to see your son this weekend. Great shopping trip!

  23. Dee@FrenchBleuVintage says

Hi Susan ~ Your honesty is so refreshing, I love it. Now please excuse me because I need to throw on my flip flops and drive to McDonald's.

  24. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Mary, he loved it! 🙂 He liked Max's steps, too. lol He has an orange tabby kitty we rescued when Chip was 12 years old…so she is around 16 years old now…so he liked the steps for Mr. Max who is now around 15 years old.

  25. I love, love, love your office.
You have such great taste. Could you come and decorate my home? 🙂

  26. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Dee, Enjoy! Mine sure hit the spot. 🙂

  27. I have not been to Marshalls in quite some time. I am inpired and must take a trip. Thanks for Metamorphasis Monday.

  28. Hi Susan….I finally have something to share for Metamorphosis Monday!

You know what? I love the way the mirror looked over the chest. I think you should keep it and use it there. It really does reflect the outside nicely.

Your office looks absolutely fabulous. Mine's a crowded, stuffed mess. I've never been known for simplicity in decorating. ha ha ha

Take care, Susan, and thanks for hosting. Susan

  29. FABBY'S LIVING says

A humburger sounds good, but I like the shopping part better for dealing with children that constantly have to go! We just visited our daughter in the capital and on the way back I went shopping for a tablecloth, it did me good! I love your great finds, that mirror is wonderful and all you got is great! Max must love the steps, so cute. Thank you for hosting and have a wonderful week dear Susan. FABBY

  30. I know that happy/sad feeling of seeing your son and having to say goodbye. Mine lives a 13 hr. drive away. What a classy guy coming home to ask his friend to be his best man! Congratulations on the forthcoming wedding! My son was just married in July!
I think you dealt with your emotions perfectly!
I love the mirror and especially for that price but I also love the clock…you did measure just the frame not including the box right? 🙂 I'm not so sure that that little bit of difference will be felt. Just keep the lamp to the side enough that it tricks the eye!

  31. Ann@A Sentimental Life says

the office is gorgeous and it has been fun watching it evolve. I am loving the clock and think you need to keep it!

  32. You have such a good eye for finding just the perfect accessories for your great office!

    Thank you for the party!

    bee blessed
    mary

  33. Your office is BEAUTIFUL! I've pinned it onto my craft room inspiration board! Thanks so much for hosting!

    Andrea @ justdownthehall.blogspot.com

  34. What fun finds! I've always wanted to make a small table top out of a huge clock.

  35. Gloria (The Little Red House with the White Porch) says

First of all, good for you for getting out after your son left! I would have just laid on the couch flipping through the tv feeling sorry for myself. I am going to keep your good attitude in mind when this will be happening to me one day in the future! My son isn't getting any younger and will be out the door one of these days! And what a smart idea to get yourself something shopping… and please keep that mirror. Even though it's a little bigger, it will only be a half inch on each side and I think bigger would even be better because the clock is big. If you got a mirror that is small, the clock might overpower it. And that wall is big, it can handle both big pieces. Well, I think I'm done writing this book! Sorry to go on and on! 😉
    Best,
    Gloria
P.S. I like the photo of the food. 🙂

    Baci
    Sabry!!

  37. You are SUCH a bad influence! Now you KNOW I'm going to have to try McD's Caramel Apple sundae! I didn't even know they existed. They better be available in my area or I'm moving south!

I have that same little folding step in my kitchen & use it all the time. I'm 5'7" & can't reach the top shelves in there without a little help.

Yes, do keep that beautiful mirror! I'm sure you'll find the perfect spot for it.

I'm sorry you were sad when your son left, but let me assure you, he'll be back & hopefully, will someday bring joyous little feet with him.

    Hugs,
    Rett

  38. McDonald's and Marshalls in a crisis…I am so with you! Shopping as therapy…Now that I'm on Weight Watchers, I've had to trade a carmel sundae (boy, those look GOOD) for just the apple, but I definitely know the feeling. Our children are always our children and we never stop worrying about them.
    Cheryl at My Sister's Cottage

  39. Hi Susan, My heart s with you ,girl. My "children" are at the phase too. many a bittersweet tear have been shed. Your mirror looks good. As always, I enjoy your style! Chin up. Dianna

  40. Hi, I'm Laura Ingalls Gunn says

    What great deals you found.

I love to eat McD's shakes and fries on sad occasions. Salty sweet. 🙂

  41. Susan, we are certainly cut from the same cloth… Mickie D's for Dr Pepper and LARGE fries is my go-to when I'm down LOL. I've never let myself add ice cream to the mix but I think I'll give that a try next time!

Keep the mirror – it's gorgeous.

  42. Anita @ Cedar Hill Ranch says

Susan, that McDonald's trip was too funny. Oh and I really think the mirror is fantastic and I hope you will use it even it if is a whopping 1/2 inch too big on each side.

  43. The Quintessential Magpie says

Susan, your office is really looking great. You have just moved mountains in terms of getting it all done: the floors, the walls, the furnishings. Good job!

Here's my two cents, and you can take it or leave it because that's exactly what it's worth. LOL!

I love the clock, but after seeing it in the pictures, it seems to make that wall look a little busy, almost as if it competes with the chair fabric. I adore it, though, and if you love it, too, then definitely consider it. I love clocks like that, and you picked a good one! Very good looking. Maybe grouped with other objects, it would work. I would almost rather see you have a French sign or something along that order with lettering in black to work with the print of the chair.

I like your mirror a lot (even though I'm a gold girl). Do you really think that the mirror overpowers the chest? It doesn't bother me. It looks to be about the same size, and the price is great! Of course, if it's going to bother you to look at it, then I might reconsider. But I like it. Plus, it will be up on the wall, and it being a small fraction too large over the edge may not show that much.

You will find the perfect thing for that wall. Oh, hmmmm… I have a mirror here that I got at Target that I just love. It's brown, but you could paint it white. I'll email you a link if they still have it. It's a neat shape… sort of like a trefoil… I think that's the term, but I could be wrong. It's early, and I'm tired from staying up eBaying last night. LOL!Anyhow, I bought mine last spring, but I saw that Eddie Ross found a bigger one at Lowe's. Mine might be too small. But I can see that shape on your wall. Mine was about $30 or so. Not sure about the one at Lowe's, but he seemed to think it was well priced.

    XO,

    Sheila

  44. Mickey D's would have lijely been one of my stops as well. In addition to the stash of baked goods I whip up when then the kids come home. Great bargains.

  45. Ramblings of a Southern Girl ~ Rhonda G says

Susan, Your office is beautiful!!! I would hang out in here all the time! The white furniture is so crisp and pretty, and the accessories are perfect, making it inviting and warm! 🙂

  46. Susan, you make me laugh. After our recent "sons in the house" weekend I felt the need for a latte and some TJ Maxx time, funny how shopping eases all pain 😉

I've had great fun browsing all the wonderful Met Monday posts – thank you for hosting!

  47. Linda @boydstreetbungalow says

I would definitely keep the mirror. It looks great. Like someone else said… A 1/2 inch overhang on each side is insignificant. The reflection of the light fixture in the mirror is perfect! The clock is a keeper, too. Have a similar one in my living room. Love your office!

  48. Looks great Susan!

  49. Gail @ Faithfulness Farm says

LOVE the mirror — looks perfect there. I bought that same stool in purple from TJMaxx — pregnant daughter is an RN in an assisted living setting and was looking for a stool to help her when she is helping clients — this fold-ip model is perfect for her to carry around 🙂

    Blessings!
    Gail

  50. Susan, you totally handled your sadness at your son's departure in the most appropriate way!!! That office of yours is so incredibly awesome I love it more every single time I look at it. So sorry about the mirror, but for $20 it is one I would hang onto. You WILL find the RIGHT ONE for your office space and you will be able to use your great find elsewhere one day. Love the clock, too.

  51. Katie Franck says

You have a wonderful blog….so happy to be a follower! Thanks for hosting too 🙂

  52. Happy Monday Susan,

You just can't take that mirror back…it's too gorgeous. Have you thought of turning it to the horizontal?

  53. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Chris…I know, it's too pretty to take back, especially at that price. I think I want it positioned over the chest itself, but I may end up trying it another way. It can be hung vertically or horizontally…has hooks on back for both ways. It's actually not looking too bad just propped on the chest…but I know it's a bit too big.

  54. I'm so happy to hear that you deal with things in such a mature fashion! Hope you enjoyed your "treat." Glad you got to see your son. Did he find a job here in Dayton or did he move elsewhere in the state? Hope you find just the right things for over your chest and chair. It's gonna happen- just make take a bit longer than you hoped. 🙂

  55. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

    Hi Sue,
Well, he took the bar at the end of July and he'll get the results at the end of October. In the meantime, he had an interview recently and has another one this next week. Keep your fingers crossed! 🙂
Your so right about the decorating that wall. It will all come together…eventually. 🙂

  56. Eileen @ Cottage Beach House says

I love the clock. I think it will look great over the chair.
I am also working on my office/ guest room. So much to do, but you are a true inspiration, and I like your attitude, and the way you look at life.

  57. FABBY'S LIVING says

You look like a kid in the mirror reflection Susan….so cute!! Hugs,
    FABBY

  58. I love it all!!!! looking beautiful!

  59. Mary @ Redo 101 says

I'm loving the mirror and I'm not happy it doesn't fit 🙁 but bet you'll find one that is just perfect! Thanks for hostessing the party!

    Mary @ Redo 101

  60. Tisha @ Delectable Home says

LOVE the way the office is coming together! And thanks for giving us the chance to link up…so many great posts today!

  61. The mirror was a good buy for sure! You must be enjoying your beautiful office.

    Thank you for hosting,

    Carolyn

  62. I like all or your new purchases. I especially like the clock! I have one from HomeGoods like that hanging on the wall by my staircase in the foyer. That's a bargain too. I'd keep it and try to find a place for it. Your office is really charming.

  63. Susan At Glen Oaks Primitives says

Hi, Susan, I can't believe how perfectly beautiful your office is. It's just like
a magazine feature. By the way, I did a
Blog This on my blog the other day on your
Autumn Tablescape and my readers were so
blown away by the beauty. I encouraged them
to go to your blog and go through your
archives of the other gorgeous tablescapes.
They also all want to know if you and your
family use that room and eat at those
settings, I said "Sure they do!". But
seriously, I love your blog and tablescapes.
    Warm Regards,
    Susan

  64. I LOVE all your purchases. I know the mirror is a bit larger but it really looks great with the lamp and accessories you have on the chest. And with the price you paid for it you really have nothing to lose.

I also had two of my daughters fly home for my birthday this weekend. Both have families of their own, so it was just wonderful having them here. It IS so sad to have to see them go back. We only get to see them a few times a year and its hard. I treasured every minute with them.

Susan..love all that you do and I look forward everyday for your posts. You are such an inspiration to me. Thankyou!!

  65. Tracy Suzanne says

Hi Susan. I love that mirror!! The clock is beautiful too and what great deals.

Is there a problem with linking up right now. I've tried several times to link up this post:
    http://cottonpickincute.blogspot.com/2011/09/jack-lantern-door-hanging-ready-for.html#links

but it tells me it's not a valid link. It worked elsewhere though. I love your Met Mondays and would really like to link up.

    Thanks…Tracy 🙂

  66. Lori @ Stoney's Crew says

I had to chuckle when I read how you dealt with the stress of your son going back to his home via retail therapy. That is what I have been doing this past week while hubby has been out of town on business. That is how I found and purchased the little sewing table like you saw last week at Urban Relics. The story of what and how it was used is #260 on today's link up!

  67. Chari at Happy To Design says

    Hi Susan…

Ohhh…what great finds, my friend! I really do love the large mirror, surely you'll be able to use it somewhere. You sure can't beat the price! I would have picked it up in flash! Hehe! I also really love your big clock and think that it will look fabulous above your pretty chair! Love the idea of it being part of a wall grouping! Ohhh..and the little step-stool is perfect! Sooo happy for you, my friend! I find that when I'm a bit sad…shopping always helps! wink! Sorry that your visit with your son was so short!

Well dear friend, I am running late for joining your party but better late than never! Thank you so much for hosting!

    Love ya,
    Chari @Happy To Design

  68. longcountryroad says

Just have to say that carmel apple Sundae looks to delicious! I think all of your finds fit that room perfectly….I would keep the mirror it doesn't look too large at all. Thanks for hosting!

  69. Hi Susan! First, thank you for hosting Metamorphosis Monday! Second – love your Marshall's finds! And Third – have you considered using the slightly over-sized mirror as part of a silver mirror collage that might encompass the whole wall? Check out a similar gallery wall (that could be done with silver mirrors of all shapes and sizes, with other silver items like monograms worked in) – go to 320 Sycamore's post today.
    Just a thought!

  73. I love your request for a mirror shrinking machine. My husband teaches shop. When someone cuts their wood too short he tells them "go see Mr. Giannell and ask him for my board stretcher that he borrowed." It gets someone every sememster!

    Lori, that's too funny…love it!
