Dollhouse Updates: You’ll Never Believe How Much I Brought Up This Time!

Welcome to the 818th Metamorphosis Monday! So much has happened since I shared my last post for Tablescape Thursday. As I’m sure you’ve heard, we had a big weather event across the southeast. I was scheduled to head to the Dollhouse last Thursday, but I stayed put until things looked better in my area mid-day Friday. I had one of the best drives up I’ve ever had with very little traffic and no major backups like I normally encounter. Everything was great until the last 10 miles when I guess I finally caught up to the storm. That was a long 10 miles! If you live in the path that the storm took this past week, I hope you, your family, and your home are safe!

I should have taken a photo of my SUV loaded down for this trip. As usual, I packed it to the gills, leaving ample room to see out the back and side windows. On this trip up, I managed to bring up the following: my bike, a floor-standing towel warmer, a large, rolling Yeti cooler, a medium-sized, soft, Yeti cooler, 2 large boxes of candles, 3 large boxes of china/dishes, the other painting that goes with the one that I already have in the office, a lamp, 20+ sweaters, 4 coats, a suitcase full of clothes and shoes, dish towels, measuring cups, cookie sheets, cake pans and other miscellaneous kitchen stuff, a ton of books, and a few Christmas gifts for family since I’ve already started my holiday shopping. I wanted to bring up all of my puzzles and the rest of the books from my office, but that will have to wait for the next trip up. Once the office bookshelves are empty, I’d love to replace them with shelves that will not sag under the weight of hardback books.

Office Bookcase

These trips up to the Dollhouse have been beneficial in readying the upstairs bathrooms and master closet area in the Georgia house for painting. I know the towel warmer will come in handy here this winter even more than it does in Georgia. Here’s where the towel warmer ended up—in the upstairs guest bath.

Of the four bathrooms in this house, only two are large enough to accommodate the towel warmer: the basement bathroom and the hall/guest bath upstairs. I placed the warmer behind the door where it solved a problem in this bathroom—keeping the door from bumping into the light fixture located on that side of the bathroom mirror.

Also, there’s an outlet right above it which works out great!

This bathroom is serving another big storage need.

In my master bath in Georgia, I store all my perfume on a pretty shelf found in Tuesday Morning many years back. After discovering Penhaligon’s perfume a couple of years ago, this collection grew a good bit in size.

Pretty Perfume Display, Perfumes Displayed on 3-Tier Shelf

I brought up all my perfume since the shelf in the Georgia bathroom needs to be removed for the painting/renovation I have planned for that bathroom. Visible in this photo from when the home was listed for sale two years ago, you’ll notice a shallow cabinet on the wall to the left.

Charming Bathroom, Old Home

When I first opened the doors of this cabinet, I thought how perfect it would be for perfume storage. I would love it if it had one more shelf. I looked online and found a company that sells shelves that look very similar to the ones in this cabinet. Plus, they will customize a shelf to the size needed. The smallest size shelf they have available wasn’t quite as shallow as what I needed, so I ordered a shelf in the correct length and in the “notes” section I asked if they could make it the depth needed for my cabinet, giving them the exact measurements. I haven’t heard anything back, but the shelf is supposedly due to arrive in about a week. If it arrives too big/deep from front to back, I’ll find someone who can trim it down for me. One more shelf will let me spread out my collection for easier access. If you could use an extra shelf or two in your cabinets, this is where I ordered mine: Customized Replacement Shelves.

Thanks so much to the lovely BNOTP reader who shared that Wallace now makes different types of serving pieces for the Napoleon Bee flatware pattern. I couldn’t resist buying a few iced teaspoons, as well. If you have this pattern, you’ll find these here: Napoleon Bee 4-pc Serving Set AND Napoleon Bee Iced Teaspoons. A set of the Napoleon Bee Flatware is still available for purchase here: Napoleon Bee Flatware. Looking forward to sharing more updates here in the Dollhouse this week! If you don’t want to miss those, consider subscribing (it’s free!) for an email notice whenever I post, here: Subscribe for Email Updates.

Love your perfumes and shelf. Beautiful display! I wish I could load up my car with some of your stuff and caravan behind you to Ohio! I would love doing that. I have wanted a towel warmer for years. You have probably pushed me into getting one!

    • Ha! That would be great! Linda, you would love a towel warmer! They are especially wonderful in the winter, but I use mine all year long. They are great for warming up a robe or blanket, too.

  2. The towel warmer is going to be really great in that colder climate! Your perfume collection is impressive! Glad you didn’t have any damage in Georgia, the devastation from Helene is unbelievable~

    • Thanks, Jenna! I know, I feel horrible for NC and some of the areas that were so badly hit. I’m not sure anyone was truly prepared for how bad it was.

  3. That storm was a monster. I’m surprised you didn’t encounter more problems heading north. Your perfume makes such a pretty display. I know you’re having fun with this change of house. Thanks for having us over.

  4. Franceil Parde says

I’ve ALWAYS wanted a towel warmer!!! (no room in our cabin.)
YOU ARE a champion “packer upper!!!” WAY!!! franki

  5. Susan, I was so glad to see your post this morning! I wondered about you and how you made out in Georgia during Helene. I’m so glad you are okay and apparently had no damage! It was a terrible storm with such devastating damage for so many. Love all of your updates to the Dollhouse and look forward to your posts about them. It’s amazing what you get accomplished in short periods of time!

  6. You really know how to pack! Hope you got some unpacking assistance!

  7. I bet you were really tired after unloading your car. Do you worry about perfume changing or “going bad”? I always thought if perfume hung around too long, it changed. Of course I don’t have the large collection you have. Won’t you miss the perfumes in your Georgia home when you return?

    • So far, I haven’t had any issues. I’ve had one perfume that turned a little dark but it still smells fine. I’ve read that if it’s stored in a dark area that doesn’t get too cold or too hot, it can last for quite a while. There were no windows where I’ve been storing it so maybe that’s why I haven’t had any issues.
I have a few duplicates of my faves, so I’ll probably take those back home with me when I head back. I was using those here but since I needed to remove the shelf that holds the perfume for painting, I’ll just leave the bulk of my collection here since I’m not sure when I’ll have the painting done in that bathroom.

  8. Glad you are safe and sound. Question I have always had was with SO MANY perfumes, how do you prevent them turning rancid before you have even used much of them? I use perfume daily but only have 3 bottles and I purposely don’t buy more as I don’t want it to be wasted before it turns bad. I store it in my bedroom on a tray on my dresser, so not in strong light or moisture which is supposed to be bad for them. I was just curious in case you had a secret! Thanks, Toni

    • Thanks, Toni! So far, I haven’t had any issues with any turning rancid. I only have one perfume that has turned darker, but it still smells fine. Maybe they’ve done well since they are stored in a room that doesn’t have windows back home.
I’ve just heard that they should be stored in a cool area and not in a room with a lot of bright light of humidity.
They should do well in the guest bath since that shower will rarely be used and they will be in a dark cupboard.

  9. SharonFromMichigan says

I love that your upstairs bathroom has a walk in shower. We are currently renovating one of our bathrooms to replace the tub with a walk in shower. We never take baths & have a tub in our upstairs bathroom that will stay. I can’t wait until all the construction is over.

  10. Susan, that sounds like quite the trip you made and I’m loving all the updates to the Dollhouse! I was really glad to see this post this morning and that you are safe and sound. Helene was a monster of a storm and such destruction for so many. The pictures were heart-breaking.

  11. Susan,
Glad that you are safe and sound….
Thanks so much for hosting this wonderful party!! I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into it along with visiting all the links!! I hope you are having a great week!!

  12. Glad you arrived safely! I heard there was a big fire in a biolab or chemical lab near Atlanta, so was concerned you might have to evacuate. You already did! I pray it doesn’t cause extensive damage. Anything with chemicals is always concerning.

  13. Bobbi Duncan says

Terrible, terrible storm; so glad to hear you are fine. That was quite the haul for this most recent trip from Atlanta to Oakwood. Wow, that’s a lot of perfume! I only have four now. That cabinet is the perfect place to store them. I just got caught up with your last few posts- as we were traveling again- and see that you’re letting your natural hair color grow out. Covid was the perfect time for me to do the same. It’s so freeing and really nice not to spend all that money. From your pictures, it looks like our now natural hair color is the same lol! We’re having a good bit of remodeling done this fall and winter (ug!) so I’ve been pretty much occupied with lining up contractors of late. Knowing all you’ve done to both your homes keeps me forging ahead. Hugs!

  14. SO glad you were ok through the storms, and made it up to OH in one piece with all your goods! I love your perfume cabinet too – so fun! Thanks as always for hosting, though I’m a bit late this week. Computer problems are so challenging! Can’t wait to see what everybody’s up to – take care till Thursday!

  15. Dawnemarie says

The ‘fumes! Wow. What an inventory

Happy you’re safe. I faired well in Ft. Myers. Still waiting for a roof from Ian. Thanks to Heritage Insurance.

The doll house is looking better and better. Keep up the good work! You are amazing.

  16. Can you please share the name of the perfume in the purple “apple” shaped bottle? I used to wear it. Thank you.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
