Ruth’s Summer Backyard Oasis

Welcome to the 596th Metamorphosis Monday!

How can it be summer already, where did spring go? It’s all going by way too quickly. I want it to slow down so we can enjoy every moment of our warm weather days!

Since we are all spending so much more time at home these days, I was thinking recently about how important it is to make those places we like to hang out during the summer as relaxing and comfortable as possible. The last few months have really been a great time to spruce up our homes, especially the outdoor living spaces since most of us are in serious Staycation mode this summer.

I have a wonderful summer deck transformation to share for this week’s Metamorphosis Monday! Ruth, a lovely BNOTP reader, has created a beautiful oasis for enjoying summer here on her backyard deck. Look at that gorgeous view! Some folks love a cityscape view, but this is my favorite kind of view!

Ruth placed a fountain near her seating area so she can enjoy the soothing sounds of water while reading a book or enjoy this beautiful backyard.

White Wicker for a Summer Deck

Ruth furnished her deck with lots of summery, white, outdoor wicker. Regarding decorating her deck for summer, Ruth said, “Every year I have a theme. I have 6 themes. One I haven’t done in a while is Bollywood–everything Eastern, India especially.”

Decorate Deck with Bright Colors for Summer

Ruth said, “You can’t tell but I have beaded hanging tealight holders hanging in the tree. They will look lovely with the other tealights lit at the night, but of course, they will be battery operated in the tree.”

White Wicker for a Summer Deck

Ruth found this pink coral pillow last year in Pier 1. She ended up not using it last year out on her deck because the color clashed with the other pinks she was using that summer. When Ruth decided to decorate this year in a Bollywood theme, she remembered the pillow and decided to spruce it a bit to better fit with this year’s theme.

Ruth said, “Having a lot of home time on my hands, I decided to decorate the pillow with an Indian elephant. Was a fun project!” Ruth used acrylic paint to add this beautiful elephant to her outdoor pillow. I can’t even paint a good stick figure so I’m in awe of her beautiful artwork!

Hand-Painted Pillow for Outdoor Space

Ruth said, “I found some “jewels” and some nice gold, fringe trim at JoAnn’s.” Ruth used their curbside pickup to pick up the items she needed for this pillow transformation.

I am so impressed with how Ruth decorated this pillow! It looks sooo professionally done! I love how she let some of the colors of the pillow peek through the design. The shading is really beautiful and brings the image to life.

Have you ever decorated a pillow this way? I love the idea because you could literally decorate a pillow in any design that you need or love!

Thanks so much to Ruth for sharing her beautiful summer oasis with us for this week’s Metamorphosis Monday!

  1. I too am impressed with that elephant! Wow. And the view, as well. Very peaceful and relaxing looking. Just what we need after enduring these last few months. Thanks, Ruth and Susan.

  2. Here I was ready to go out and buy that pillow — what a WOW! Would love if Ruth shared a tutorial on how to paint on fabric and recreate the look. I’d love to do that for accent pillows in my safari theme guest bedroom.

  3. What a lovely spot! I am crazy about all the bright colors! Thanks Susan

  9. What a fun idea…..having your patio or outside area have a theme. I’ve never thought of that! One more reason to hit Homegoods….yay!!! Very cute and festive looking, love the bright colors! Very fun.

  10. I can definitely say that I never would have thought “how can I do the patio? Bollywood!” A first for me. Cute! Now she needs sari fabric for draperies around seating area!

  11. Anything Bollywood and I’m in.

Loving Ruth’s deck, so summery and inviting! The elephant she painted is amazing!!! I can’t draw either, so I’m in awe of it. I love a country view, my view on my pool deck is corn and soybeans. I love it! I want summer to slow down too, I mean it will be over before we know it! And this girl is not really for winter to rear it’s head! lol Hugs, Brenda

  13. “I can’t even paint a good stick figure”–that made me laugh aloud. Ruth, that elephant is just beautiful and the focal point of the decor. He gives that gorgeous view some competition. Thanks for sharing.
