A Beach-Themed Table Setting for the 4th of July: Happy Independence Day!

Welcome to the 509th Tablescape Thursday!

It’s officially summer and the 4th of July celebrations are almost upon us!

4th of July Patriotic Beach Table Setting

We’ve been getting some heavy storms every afternoon so please excuse the “moody” background. It was only around 4:00 when I took these photos but it almost looks like it’s getting dark out.

Patriotic 4th of July Tablescape

Whenever I use a tall centerpiece I always get questions, so I’ll go ahead and address that now. Yes, it’s totally fine to use as tall a centerpiece as your heart desires when setting the table. Don’t ever limit your creativity or the joy it brings to you and others by only ever sitting the table with a short centerpiece. Go dramatic, go big, have fun! When it’s time to sit down to eat, just move that tallish centerpiece over to the sideboard or wherever you wish. That’s what I’ve always done and it works great!

Celebrate 4th of July with Festive Tablescape

A few weeks ago when I was shopping for chargers, I ran across the cutest table runner. I decided to wait a bit to see if it would go on sale. Yesterday as I was setting the table, I remembered it. I made a quick phone call and discovered it was on sale and they had one left. I zipped over and picked it up to use in today’s table.

Red, White Blue for 4th of July Tablescape

Unfortunately, I think they are all sold out online. You’ll find it here in case you want to check your local store: Bicycle Table Runner. Their summer bicycle table runner is still in stock. I’m tempted to buy it while it’s on sale, it’s so cute! You’ll find it here: Summer Bicycle Table Runner.

All their patriotic “Americana” decor is currently on sale, perfect timing for the 4th! See it all here: Americana Decor.

Bicycle Runner for 4th of July Table Setting

The blue and white striped bicycle table runner put me in the mood for a beach themed 4th of July table this year.

For this table I used three different flatware patterns for a little red, white and blue fun. The red/white/blue flag flatware was a find on eBay a few years back. The red flatware is available here: Red Flatware.  The blue flatware is available here: Blue Flatware.

The napkin rings are the cute bicycle napkin rings used previously in THIS table setting. Star napkins are available here: Star Napkins. I can’t remember where I found the red check napkins now, most likely HomeGoods, Pier 1 or Marshalls.

Here’s a closer view of those…forgot to take a close up of them for this post.

You may recognize the driftwood chargers.

Driftwood Charger Plates for 4th of July Beach Themed Table

They first appeared in THIS outdoor beach-themed table while I was visiting with family. I loved the ones I bought for my daughter-in-law/son so much, I bought a set for myself once I returned home.

Love them in summer tablescapes, especially beach ones!

Once back home I used them in THIS beach-themed tablescape.

I love how they work in this red, white and blue setting for the 4th! (Driftwood chargers are available here: Driftwood Chargers.)

Patriotic Table for 4th of July with a Beachy Theme

I’ve paired my patriotic flag “Colonial” dinner plates by  Warren Kimble with David Carter Brown’s “Driftwood” salad plates. Both patterns are previous finds on eBay.

There are four different scenes/motifs on the David Carter Brown salad plates.

  1. Great Fourth of July Table!!! I love those salad plates!! Thanks for hosting !
    I hope you have a wonderful 4th!!

  2. What a great table you’ve set! I see a few of us discovered the bicycle napkin rings! Love the runner- what a great piece! I need to pull out my lantern boxes and put them out too! Have a great 4th!

    • Couldn’t pass those cute things up when I came across them while I was up in Ohio. Someone mentioned in the comments that they saw two of the runners on eBay, in case you would like one, Liz.
Hope you have a great 4th!

  3. Anne Shaheen says

We have had rain, dark skies and high humidity for 7 days straight. Miserable summer so far.

    • Same here, it’s been super hot with the extreme humidity. Hope it cools off a bit for the 4th. At least all the rain helps cool things down a little.

  4. Selma C. Kessler says

Such a charming table! I always enjoy your tablescapes, Susan. You always have so much joy and whimsy included. Case in point: Those little bicycle napkin rings are just ADORABLE! Man, I need to get my red, white and blue decor out. Have a splendid Independance Celebration week! 🙂

  5. I did see two of the same tablerunners on Ebay if one of your readers wants one. (Not for sale by me, FYI).

  6. Love your tablescapes Susan. I have many of them pinned. I really LOVE your Summer Breeze sign. Makes me smile and sing. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    • Thanks, Cindy! I found that sign at A Classy Flea many years ago, but there’s a place online that makes/sells the same one in case you ever want one. If you Google for “Summer Breeze Makes Me Feel Fine sign” it will pop up in Google. 🙂

  7. Thanks for hosting Susan!

  8. OMG that table runner is to die for! I’m so glad you got it to match the napkin rings.

  9. Susan,
you know I L.O.V.E. everything about that table and about celebrating the 4th of July and all my “Americana” decorations are already up (although we’ll celebrate a few days later, on Saturday, the 7th), but now, I really, really need (want!) that very, very cute table runner! ♥ Arghh… I hope you know, you’re killing me! 🙂 JK, Susan, but that’s really adorable! And, of course, are those napkin rings the icing on the cake! Ok, Susan, I think you need to get that bike you’re dreaming about and because of the sales, I need to plan a vacation to the U.S. sometime before the 4th of July! lol
    ~Hugs to you~

  10. Those tall lanterns are a great idea; they really add to the tablescape, plus when you move them to a sidetable or floor, they would add some ambient lighting. I also like your flag plates because they look weathered and not a stark white–more beachy maybe?

  11. Kathleen says

The first thing I noticed was the table runner …. so cute and the story behind getting it for the table. The plates (love them all), chargers and silverware along with those adorable bike napkin rings just make this the perfect Fourth of July table setting.

  12. My favorite things here are the table runner and the mixed up flatware! Have a great 4th, however you celebrate freedom.

  13. Your table is adorable Susan! I love the plates, napkins and the lanterns, so cute! I did a beach theme table too, after seeing the napkin rings on your blog a few weeks ago I dashed to Pier 1 and bought them along with flip flop plates. The runner is super cute too, you are ready for a festive 4th!

  14. Judy Smith says

Your sun porch as always is fabulous with your Americana themed table but I have always wondered how your porch stays dry with your frequent rain storms. Do you have a large overhang or do you have to move things around to keep them dry?

    • I do have a pretty big overhang, but it’s okay if things get wet since a lot of the furniture is outdoor wicker. The dining set isn’t, but it’s all been out on the porch for 10 years now and has done very well. I don’t move anything, don’t even bring in the furniture during the winter. It stays out fulltime. Thanks, Judy!

  15. Everything is coordinated beautifully and I love the bicycles. Thanks for hosting and have a happy holiday!

  16. Judy Hubbard says

I absolutely love your tablescape. Everything is fabulous and so Patriotic!
Happy 4th to you and everyone! It’s a great holiday!

  17. Susan, this is a fantastic tablescape! I love all of it, from the lanterns to the coordinating table runner and bicycle napkin rings. 😀 I love the way the red and white checked napkins look paired with the star napkins. I love the use of the different flatwares. I love all the dishes and the red stemware. I love it all! Great job. It really puts me in the mood for our upcoming birthday. Happy Independence day, America. :o)

  18. Linda Diane Townsend says

I thought you would like to look at this perfectly magical house.

96 Glen Farm Road, Portsmouth, RI

  19. Cyndi Raines says

Great patriotic tablescape! The runner is cute with the bike, big theme this year. Happy 4th of July. Let Freedom ring! ♥️

  20. Those tall lanterns do grab your eye! Thanks for reminding us you can remove tall centerpieces when eating.
All your textures, patterns and vivid colors make your table interesting. The stripe runner is eye catching as is the bicycle runner. Those cute bicycle napkin rings are adorable.

  21. So pretty and patriotic as well! You certainly outdid yourself again with your creativity using patterns, texture and arrangement. -Brenda-

P.S.: Canadians will be celebrating their big day (Canada Day) this weekend on July 1st. Let the partying begin!

  22. So festive, lovely and elegant. Thank You for sharing.
    HAPPY JULY 4th.

  23. Bobbi Duncan says

Susan, your tablescapes are ALWAYS so perfectly thought out! The bicycle napkin rings and table runner are adorable, as is everything on the table. Happy 4th.!

  24. Edith (Penny) Weldon says

I so adore it all!! Your Patriotic landscape so resonates with all of us!! I loved your tall lanterns!!! Can you share where you found such beauties?? I really liked the tall aspect of them and removal of them too. The colors are all such dot on. I am making a quick run to Pier 1 this week to purchase the flip flop plates for a friends birthday this week!! The bicycle accents are so precious too!!

    • Thanks so much, Edith! I’ve had the lanterns so long, I’m having trouble remembering where I found those. I may have purchased them in Old Time Pottery, they always have a lot of great lanterns, reasonably priced. If it wasn’t there, it was probably Marshalls or HomeGoods/TJMax. Have fun in Pier 1, they have so many cute things for summer and the 4th of July!

    • Oops, just noticed (Penny)…do you go by Penny?

      • Edith (Penny) Weldon says

Yes, Penny by my friendsI count you as one
Many thanks for your quick response. I will be out searching for some cute lanterns now.

  25. So adorable!!! Love it all, and the runner especially! Happy 4th to you!

  26. Your table says come, sit, and enjoy! Everything goes together perfectly. Check out Sur la Table – they have some “bicycle” items for summer/4th of July that could go along with your runner and napkin rings!

  27. sharon Essink says

love those little Adirondack chairs with the cupcakes/where did u purchase? Thanks so much

  28. I work at Pier 1 and I love looking at your tablescapes and picking out what’s from there!

    • Thanks, Lisa! Pier 1 carries so many cute things for the table, love shopping there! Most of the furniture I have on my screened porch came from there, too…now that I think about it. Glad there’s one near me!

  29. Lisa Miller says

    Lovely table~!!!
I’m wondering about the bottles in the background of the picture? They are outside the porch and look pretty and decorative– but I’ve never seen anything like that– ?

  30. Hi Susan! It’s been so long but I’ve been busy at work. Closed 2 stores and finally made it to the new one.
Question on glasses. When would you suggest using 1 or 2 glasses versus 3 – water, red, white, tumbler, etc?

I’ve been using 3 glasses and sometimes my tables feel junky. I love how you use 1 glass on this table. I like the minimalist design of it.

Thank you for answering. Trying to plan my next tablescape but also looking to maybe get rid of dishes I don’t use/like anymore unless I move and get a nice table for outdoors.

    • Thanks, Jeri! Wow, you’ve been busy! I bet it feels good to have that behind and to be in the new store.
When I’m having dinner with friends or family in the evening, we will often have wine with our meal, so that’s normally when I’d have a second glass. I’d usually have a tea glass and a wine glass for whatever type wine we’re having. If someone doesn’t want tea, then that glass could be used for water or whatever they prefer. About the only time (in real life) that I’ve used three glasses was for special occasions or holidays when we also open up a bottle of bubbly.
For Tablescape Thursday, I usually just go with the mood I’m in, how big the centerpiece is and if I have several glasses that would be really great to pair with the setting. Because my porch table is quite narrow, a table setting can look crowded when I use two glasses, but I still do it sometimes since I know those who are viewing the table may have a wider table at home so may not be as limited as I am…and they may enjoy seeing the table with a water/tea glass and a wine glass.

I kept it simple for this table since I was really having fun with the centerpiece. It’s not often I have flowers blooming in my yard (or on my deck) that I can use in a centerpiece, so I didn’t want to crowd it out with too many glasses.

Usually, the only time I’ve seen two wine glasses used was when I was attending a more formal dinner, so that’s pretty rare. I think most dinner occasions do really well with just a tea/water glass and a wine glass. I do like to at least serve water because wine can make you thirsty and it’s good to drink water along with it during a meal…in my humble opinion. 🙂

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
