Welcome to the 3rd Metamorphosis Monday!
Not long after the screened-in porch was completed, I made a simple change that had a large impact on both the appearance and the “feel” of the porch. The total cost for this change was only around $100.
Here’s a pic of the porch before the change…
And here’s after…do you see the change? 🙂
Another before…
And after…
Big hint: The change is billowing out in the breeze in this pic.

And after…
One last before…

My goal was to soften the feel of the porch. I purchased sheers for all the windows for $4.99 each at Walmart. I also purchased the painted wood rods there, too. The sheers actually exceeded my expectations because in addition to softening the hard edges, they also gave the porch a romantic, up-in-the-clouds feel that I really love. Even inexpensive, small changes can sometimes make a large impact.
Update: It’s been 5 years now and the sheers have really held up well. I just give ’em a gentle wash every couple of years and they look like the day I bought them. When they get wet, they dry right away since they are sheers. I love how lightweight they are because they catch the breezes and it adds to the airiness of the porch.
I can’t wait to see all the great “Before and Afters” posted for this Met Monday!

Oh that really is a very nice change that adds such softness to the porch. I really like it!!
Hey Susan…Always love it when you showcase your porch! You are so right about the sheers…can’t wait to get my Verandah done. YOUR PORCH continues to inspire me! I spent the weekend in Knoxville, TN…found some great antique shops on the trip up…and in Knoxville…will hopefully show you some later this week. Have a great week! ~CC (My Meta Monday is a Sentimental Journey-I thought about it the entire way home today…)
Beautiful, Susan…I love the addtion of the sheer panels!
Summer breeze. Blowing in the wind. What a perfectly dreamy porch, it’s the prettiest one ever!
Your porch is so beautiful. If I had a porch like that, I would be out there from sun up to sun down. I wpuld never get anything done.
What a great idea to add the curtains to the porch…don’t know that I ever would have thought of it, but it really softens the whole area. By the way, I keep linking up the end of my blog…what am I doing wrong??
It’s amazing how such a simple change cant make such a huge impact. I’m with Wendy, I would never leave the porch. Thank goodness for laptops lol. Kathy
your porch is beautiful either way. Everytime I look at your pictures I see something new.. I just noticed the chain covers on the porch swing tonight… if I every get a porch swing…..
blessings… Dixie
Hello Susan; I just love your porch, and the sheers look just so lovely. They really do soften the hard lines, you have a very beautiful home, I love it when you share photos with us…
Hugs;
Alauar
Ah,,, Susan, How soft and billowy the drapery looks. You are so good! Your porch is lovely as always! Hugs, Terrie
It is a dream porch! The sheers added a wonderful softness and you are right, almost like relaxing in the clouds:-)
♥♥♥
I think the sheers are beautiful and they do give your porch a romantic, in the clouds feeling! 😀 Jewel
The sheers did make a huge difference. They just seem to have finished the room. They do give it a very romantic feel and make the porch look more like a room than a porch. What a wonderful addition. Hugs, Marty
The sheers do soften the porch. I bet it’s so calming to watch them billowing in the breeze. ~ Robyn
Great porch! I wish mine could have some of that character. Can’t wait to have time to look at everyone’s changes! 🙂
Hi Susan, the sheers really made a big difference. I like the softened look. I just posted my contribution…Christine
No doubt what the change was and of course the icing on the cake;) It added the magic touch;) French
It’s amazing how much those sheers changed the look and feel of your porch. It reminds me of that Seals and Croft song, “Summer Breeze”.
The sheers made all the difference on your porch. It gave it such a dreamy ethereal look. The perfect place to read a book.
Debbie
LOL – No, I didn't notice because I had my computer speakers on mute. I was watching television and I often turn my speakers off so I can multi- task.
I agree that great minds think alike. :>)
The sheers did make an amazing transformation of a beautiful room to an exceptionally beautiful room! ☺ Diane
Hi Susan, thank you so much for visiting my spaces at Micasa, you are so sweet and it means a lot to me that you enjoyed your tour.there are two things that I love a squeeking screen door that slams shut and a billow sheer in the wind.It is a visual I have in my mind and I can come and look at this wonderful porch and see it.I love this room everything about it is perfection as is the rest of your lovely home. Kathysue
Lovely porch before and after! but the billowing sheers add a whole other layer to the look.
Kathy b
The sheers bring life and movement to what would otherwise seem to be a static area. Being on the second level of your home I’m sure you get a few more breezes than you would at ground level.
I really like the change they make in the overall look. I think it also brings more definition to the windows.
I love seeing your beautiful porch again. And, yes, the white curtains just seem to have really added to the romance. Great job!
xo bj
Well, you accomplished your goal! The sheers do so much to soften the room…I love it!
I remember the day you got them.Well, dear…I finally think I have an award you do NOT have.Would you please drop by and pick it up?Thanks…Ann
Your porch is GORGEOUS, I’m so jealous. The curtains are the perfect touch. Great transformation.
Owwwww I just love your porch room. I love the sheers. My friend suggested it to me a couple of years ago and I sorta laughed and blew her off. Oh my after seeing yours, I would love to try it on mine. I had to show her pics of your sheers recently and I reminded her of her suggestion to me and she was smiling like the cat who ate the mouse, and she said “I told you so”. Love the difference it made on your porch.
Would you share where you found the sheers you used to totally transform your porch? I have looked but haven’t seen any that quite equal yours ….
Susan your porch has got to be my absolute favorite. I try to look at it and think how can I do this? I just love it! It really is a lovely place I would always want to be, and I’m sure you feel the same. wow! I am lovin’ this M. Monday! It has made me very project oriented…wanting to get more done! That’s a good thing! Thank you!
Debbie
Love the porch with or without the sheers 🙂 – but they do soften the look. I hung some to help cover my vertical blinds on the sliding glass door, without blocking light and it looks so much better.
Hi Susan…I think I remember you said you had kept an inspiration photo for years of how you wanted your porch to be…if so, have you posted that picture? I’ll just bet your porch turned out even more beautiful than your inspired one.
Great idea you had for MM…so many participants to visit! 😉 Bo
First,as you and others have asked, I am ok, Trying to deal with it all on my on, not told anyone, including hubby whats going on. But I will be in Tuesday for more tests. I am taking one step at a time. Now if you know anyone who makes a corset, I am needing a few, not for fun, but doc says it will help me. I am reading a book on how to make one now.
I caught a glimpse of your sign again on your porch! Summer Breeze! The words are magical, as is your wonderful porch.
it looks so romantic with the sheers!
This is my first trip to your blog. I love your porch!!!!!
Susan I’m in complete envy of your beautiful porch… in fact, of the whole deck! The whole ambiance of the space is cool (i.e., breezes on a warm day) and inviting. When ever I look at your porch pics I want to settle into one of those chairs and read a book!
Thanks for hosting Met Mondays… we’ve uploaded our first contribution and we look forward to sharing more in the future! I think Kelly and I will take turns 🙂
All the best,

~Misti
No doubt those few, simple changes made this porch look 100% better. It is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. I would sleep out there!
perfection at a bargain price!!! I STILL want to just sit on your porch! Someday I’m just gonna show up!!!!!
I realize that you don’t have the dust in the South like we do in the desert, but how do the sheers hold up outside? They are beautiful, and worth whatever care is required. Sally
The curtains really make a nice difference, softens and makes it more romantic tranquil place.
Kindredly, Lynne Laura
Beautiful! Good job!

Oh you’re right! They give such a breezy carefree feeling. Love them!
I’m planning a Tablescape Thursday for this week.
Do we still need to let you know? I know you use Mr Linky now so I wasn’t sure.
~Melissa 🙂
You porch is just over the moon fabulous! I grew up in an old farmhouse that had a lovely wrap around porch. We all spent a lot of time out there. There’s just nothing like it!
I am working on mobilizng the bloggng community to ry to get Conda Nast to keep the Domino magazine website up as a subscription site in the hopes that we will not lose Domino completely. I have posted the letter I wrote and sent to them on my blog. Please let me know if you are interested in participating. Thanks so much!
Susan, adding curtains to my porch right now, after seeing yours. Our porches are very similar, except I have a hammock instead of a swing. I am getting ready to have my tongue-in-groove floor polyurethaned, but I am wondering, have you had any problems when rain comes in during storms? Sometimes we are away and wouldn’t be able to clean it up right away!
Oh, yeah…if it’s a big enough storm, the rain definitely gets in…about 2-3 feet. But the flooring on my porch is designed for porches. It’s pressure treated pine flooring that that’s been KDAT (Kiln Dried After Treatment). So, it’s okay if it gets wet. You definitely do not want to use any type flooring that wasn’t specifically designed to be used for a porch. When they installed it, they both glued and nailed it down.
Here’s a site that shows it: https://www.yellawood.com/products/kiln-dried-after-treatment/kdat-tongue-and-groove-porch-flooring/
