August was the month I bought a lot of things that I really needed for the Dollhouse, mainly items for my office and kitchen. As much as I have tried to not duplicate things that I already own back in Georgia, there were some must-haves, need-right-now items that I didn’t mind duplicating.
Starting here in the hallway that leads to my office, the anti-skid pad that I purchased to go under the runner is the best anti-skid pad I have ever purchased for any rug. This runner does not budge, which is really important since it stops just a few inches back from the stairs! If you have a runner or entry rug that tends to slide around, you’ll find this anti-skid pad in a bunch of different sizes here: Anti-skid Rug Pads for Area Rugs.
Have to mention the all-wool rug I purchased last month for the office since it’s something I get to use and enjoy every single day.
It is beautiful and feels amazing underfoot!
You’ll find it available in 5 different colors here: Beautiful Rug, Available in 5 Colors. If I could find another place in this house to use one, I’d be super tempted to buy a second one. Great rug!
This chair was a huge improvement over the smaller chair that I’ve been using. It’s very comfortable and I like how the cushion attached to the back has a bit of movement so it adjusts to fit your height and the shape of your back as you lean back. Also, the arms flip up and out of the way when you need to scoot up closer to the desk…love that! You’ll find this beautiful desk chair available in several colors here: Executive Desk Chair.
I’m crazy about the console table I added behind my desk recently. It’s so convenient having it there—love how it holds my agenda/calendar and the lamp I purchased for the office. It’s super sturdy so I expect it to last for many, many years! It would also work great behind a sofa or in a narrow hallway. You’ll find it available here: Console/Sofa Table for Office, Hall, Entry, and Living Room.
I write with a pencil a lot throughout the day. I’ve always loved pencils! This is the pencil sharpener I use when I’m in Georgia and I really like it. You’ll find it available here: Pencil Sharpener.
I liked the one in Georgia so much, I purchased the same brand for the Dollhouse office. I went with this shape for something different. Between the two, I think I prefer the taller one that I use in Georgia, but both work equally great, so go with the one that’s the shape you like. You’ll find this one available here: Pencil Sharpener.
When I used to stay with my son on visits to see the family, I set up a little desk area in my son’s guest room. My oldest grandson now enjoys working at that desk. Back in the day, this was the rotating pencil/pen holder that I used.
It came with me when I moved my desk stuff over to the house I purchased nearby. It has held up beautifully and I very much recommend it if you need a way to corral your pens, scissors, and such. You’ll find it available in three different colors here: Rotating Pencil Caddy.
I use these Lens Wipes back home in Georgia to keep my eyeglasses smudge-free, so they were one of the first things I purchased when I set up my office in the Dollhouse. They come individually wrapped, so they are great to carry in a purse or whenever I travel. You’ll find them available here: Pre-Moistened Lens Cleaning Wipes.
Love, love, love the curved console table I purchased for the upstairs hallway in the Dollhouse. It solved the issue I had with coming out of the office at night and facing a non-lit staircase going up to my bedroom. Love the soft lamp glow and this view as I climb the stairs each night. You’ll find this pretty console available in a few different colors here: Curved Console Table.
There were a couple of “organizing” items that I purchased for the Dollhouse fridge that have been a big success. I’m crazy about the egg dispenser that’s visible on the top shelf on the right.
I need to buy one for the Georgia house because I always feel like I’m going to drop the egg holder I use there when I’m trying to pull it out to reach an egg at the back. This one is much easier to use because it is ever so slightly slanted, so as you take an egg from the front, another egg will roll down to take its place. Really like this design a lot! You’ll find it available here: Egg Keeper.
Another purchase for the new fridge was clear bins for storing/organizing fruits and vegetables. You may be able to see those in the see-through bins located in the lower part of the refrigerator. They came in all sizes, including some smaller sizes that came in handy for storing cherry tomatoes, blueberries, and grapes.
This storage set also included two larger bins that I’m using inside the full-convert drawer. I really like using bins because if something leaks, it’s so easy to clean up.
A lot of the bins in this set have a grid in the bottom so any moisture that any moisture that accumulates inside the bin, goes down and under the grid. That seems to work really well because I didn’t have issues with food getting soggy. I was amazed at how long the blueberries, grapes, carrots, tomatoes, and spinach stayed fresh in these bins! I used almost everything up before I left to return to Georgia, but I will fill them up again when I’m back! You’ll find these available here: 14 Refrigerator Organizer Bins.
Before we leave the fridge, I am really happy with how it’s been performing. Between the top ice bin and the six huge ball/craft ice that it makes each day, I haven’t found myself running out of ice. I purchased my refrigerator here: LG Counter-Depth Craft Ice with Instaview Door. You’ll find a well-done video explaining all its features here: LG Counter-Depth Refrigerator.
Forgot to take a photo of these two storage bins before I left, but I really like how they have worked out! I’ve been using them to store onions and potatoes in the pantry that’s just to the left of the refrigerator. They look so nice in there when I open the pantry doors, and love how accessible everything is through the opening in front. You’ll find these pretty, functional storage bins here: Stackable Pantry Storage for Vegetables and Fruits.
While we’re here in the kitchen, have to mention the pretty utensil holder and knife block I purchased. The very affordable Cuisinart block/knives are so pretty on my counter, and the knives work great! I can’t tell any difference between the Cuisinart set and my much more expensive knife set back in Georgia. You’ll find both of these kitchen additions here: Cuisinart Block Knife Set. here: Kitchen Utensil Container.
Another kitchen purchase last month that has worked out great is this 4-slice toaster. I use it almost every day and have really enjoyed it. I purposely chose a larger, 4-slice toaster just in case my grandsons were here sometime for breakfast. I love the idea of being able to make 4 pieces of toast all at once. I’ve found it to be consistent and accurate in how it toasts! You’ll find it available here: 4-Slice Toaster.
I saw this apple slicer during a shopping trip to Dorothy Lane Market and almost bought it. Once back home, I regretted not having purchased it. Thankfully, I was able to find it online. My grandsons love apples sliced this way! I love how the blades aren’t open/visible when it’s stored away, it stores away so neatly! I also love how the base creates a little platform for resting the apple on as you cut it. Brilliant design! You’ll find it available here: Apple Slicer.
I foolishly tried to reinvent the wheel when I was looking for a good paper towel holder for the Dollhouse. I purchased two different holders that claimed to stay put when you pulled off a paper towel. I ended up returning both since they failed tremendously. I finally took the time to look up which holder I had purchased for my home in Georgia since I love how it works. This is the one I have back in Georgia that works flawlessly. It doesn’t budge when I pull a paper towel off, plus, 99% of the time, I can pull a paper towel off without having to touch anything other than the paper towel itself. I don’t know how SimpleHuman figured out a way to design it where it works that way, but it’s the best countertop paper towel dispenser I’ve ever used. Very happy with how it’s working both in Georgia and in the Dollhouse! You’ll find it available here: SimpleHuman Paper Towel Holder.
This is the clothes drying rack I purchased for my laundry room last month. I liked it so much after it arrived, I immediately purchased a second one. I always hang my jeans, shorts, tops, dresses and other clothing to dry, so having two racks is super handy. This one is sturdy, much sturdier than the one I use in Georgia. Love it and recommend it! You’ll find it available here: Clothes Drying Rack.
The Dollhouse has 4 bathrooms so I needed a lot of bathroom-size trashcans. I bought a different one initially and found it to be a bit too small once it arrived. I searched again and this is the one I purchased next. I liked it so much after it arrived, I went ahead and purchased two more for the remaining bathrooms. It’s the perfect size for a bathroom and bags don’t slip off the rim and fall inside. You’ll find it available here: Trash Can, Great Size size for Bathroom.
I hope you find this list helpful as you shop for the items you need for your home! Happy weekend! Are you feeling a touch of autumn weather in your area? It has cooled off a lot here and in Ohio.
Susan,
This is the drying rack I hung in my laundry room. It’s terrific and available on Amazon. I tried to copy a picture of it, but it didn’t work.
Danya B Accordion Clothes Drying Rack, Retractable, Wall Mounted Towel Rack and Hooks for Clothes and Towels for use in Laundry Room or Garage (White)
All your purchases look great! Congratulations on your new home.
Is this it: https://amzn.to/3TfdXeL
I love that! Not sure it would work on the concrete walls in my basement in the Dollhouse, but I love the design and look of it!
Thanks for all of your recommendations. I save items of interest to my Amazon wish list, so I can find them when I need them. I’m still thinking about the rug but really like yours. I have a few of those refrigerator bins and might get a set like the ones you recommended. I have pretty much quit using plastic for storage for raw and also cooked leftovers because I am likely to use if I can see it when I open the refrigerator. Your new home is really coming along.
Susan,
What a great post! My wish list is filling up.
I truly appreciate you sharing all these goodies. And allowing us to follow you in the dollhouse. Exciting!
I like those dry goods storage bins; I need to look for places to use them. (our pantry and cabinets are shallow)
I just put the executive office chair and two auto pencil sharpeners in my cart on Amazon. Thanks Susan. Hope you are having a great weekend. The weather is soooo perfect here today.
Autumn is definitely in the air here in
Pennsylvania, going down to the mid 40 degree mark a couple of nights! My favorite season.
Susan,
Thanks for sharing your many great purchases. Here is another dryer rack that I have and love, but it takes up a bit more space:

Also, for those knife blocks that have vertical slots, a professional knife sharpener once told me to insert the knives upside down to keep the blades sharp. That way the blade is up and not going into the wood. I think that is why most newer blocks have horizontal slots. Of course mine is 40+ years old!
Susan, you are our very own consumer tester. When your desk was at your son’s, is the mercury glass I see in the photo, the lamp you mentioned prior ? Sooner or later I need some new lamps because I have cats leaping tall buildings, i mean plant shelves.
Also, I love the pad under the rug. When you clean, do you move the rug and pad to clean the floor ? Years ago, I had a pad that glued itself to the floor because it’s so hot and humid here. I was careless about picking everything up. I would vacuum the rug and move on. Things have improved so much in some ways for household items. I have a folding rack like yours now. My heavy duty wooden one had a rod crack and break.
I have autumn envy. It’s still really hot here and if it keeps raining, we will need an ark. Some areas have flooded. During the night, it’s in the upper 70’s. Have a good weekend
I look forward to each of your posts. How do you use each of your computer screens? Are they a work necessity? Have a fantastic day.
Thanks, Patrice! I wrote a post a few years back about why I like having three monitors and how I use them. You’ll find it here: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/how-i-use-3-monitors-to-work-and-play-in-my-home-office/
