The last time we checked out the office was a few weeks ago when the plantation shutters were added to this room. Around that same time, or maybe it was a few days after, I stumbled across a chair I really liked while shopping for something else on the Home Depot website. I didn’t realize HD had branched out into offering furniture on their site. It reminds me of the days when the Home Depot Expos were around. I miss that store.
The chair took about a week to arrive. It was packaged really well so arrived with no issues. I wish I had a cute throw to toss across it. lol All my throws that would work with this chair are back in Georgia. The floor lamp is a lamp I purchased a few years back, and then ended up not using. It’s been hanging out in the basement the past couple of years, but I brought it up to the Dollhouse recently just to add a little more lighting here in the office.
I’m very happy with how the chair looks here, so much so, I went ahead and ordered a second one. I love the look of a cozy seating area/group with matching chairs. Eventually, there will be two of these in this “corner” with a table/lamp in between them. (Chair is available in several fabric designs here: Occasional Chair.)
Let’s take a closer look at the fabric.
I’ve always wanted to add more botanical and bird prints to my home in Georgia, so I am loving this pretty bird-themed fabric!
I love mixing different fabric patterns in a room. It’s really not that hard to do as long as you keep the scale or size of the patterns different. This fabric is so pretty—it has a soft, faded, vintage look. Though it’s not, it almost has the appearance of a linen/silk blend. The colors in the design are beautiful—sage green, soft browns, and various shades of blue, all against an off-white background. Love that faded, vintage look!
The colors in the chair work really well with the colors in the rug that I chose for this room. I see some browns, pretty sage green, and various shades of blue in both.
The background color of the chair goes well with the walls, shutters, and the off-white color of my desk. Can’t wait until the second one arrives! This chair is very reasonably priced, but there is one important thing to know if you’re thinking of ordering it. As of right now, it has a very firm seat and back, firmer than any occasional chair that I’ve ever owned. I’m guessing that will soften in a bit with time. I don’t find it uncomfortable, but it is something to keep in mind. You’re not going to “sink” into this chair—it’s not that kind of chair. Also, if you are on the tall side, I don’t think this chair would be a good option. I’m 5’4″ tall and it’s fine for me, but I don’t think it would be deep enough or high enough off the floor for someone who is quite tall.
As soon as I ordered the second chair, I knew I wanted a round table to go between them, one that would be large enough to hold a medium-size lamp. I wanted it to have a casual finish, nothing too fancy. I love the look of this table with its rattan shelves. It feels like something I would find in a Charles Faudree book. It fills another need that I have for this room—the desire to add more texture, something that feels organic. If (and this is a big IF) the table turns out to be the color that we see below, or slightly darker, it should look great between the chairs. Based on some of the reviews, I’m afraid the finish may be too whitish-looking when it arrives. I’ve had that issue once before with similar tables that I’ve ordered. If it isn’t the color shown in the picture, I will have to return it. I decided to take a chance and order it for two reasons: they had only one left in this color, and it was greatly discounted because the box was damaged. The table was listed as New, just discounted due to the box. I’ll keep you posted on how it works out. It should be arriving in about two weeks. If you would like to see the other finishes this table is available in, you’ll find those here: Wood Side End Table With Woven Cane.
If the table works out, I’ll need to find a lamp for it. I’d love to find one with a bird theme, if possible. First the other chair, then the table—then we’ll look for the right lamp. Thanks for coming along on this cottage journey! Looking forward to sharing more as it continues! How do you like the chair? I wish it were a bit softer, but I have a feeling that will change with use. (Chair is available in several fabric designs here: Occasional Chair.)
See you tomorrow for Tablescape Thursday!
Looks very English decor.
I do love English cottage decor, guess that’s why I’m drawn to that chair.
Susan, I love the chair! It looks great in your office. The firm seating wouldn’t bother me very much. I also like the table. I know you must be having so much fun with the Dollhouse and seeing it take shape. So glad we’re on this journey with you! Sheryl
Thanks, Sheryl! It is fun, wish I could get it all done just the way I want it right now. lol
The table is a nice style, size and color and you got it at a discount. That being said, if it’s not the color you need you can always wipe on/wipe off a stain or put an antiquing glaze on it. Apply with a light hand and start by doing a test underneath it. It’s a cute functional table so I hope it works out.
Thanks! I was wondering about that, if I could darken it a little. I hope I can keep it!
I love the mixing patterns, gives a cozy, collected look. I love the chair, like the rug, but don’t like them together. I am loving what you are doing with the dollhouse!
Thanks, Judy!
The lamp and chair are great with the shutters and desk. Grouping the chairs and a table will give a very comfortable arrangement. It will also tone the rug.
Thanks, M! Yes, so true. Once I get a few more pieces in the room, the rug will look more at home and the way I first envisioned it.
I love the chair, but for me, it’s too busy with that rug. Don’t know that you need much more texture than the rug and the desk. Even with two chairs and a table, will the room feel “balanced” with your large lovely desk? Just my thoughts, not criticisms.
I love having multiple patterns in a room, but I know that’s not for everyone. I don’t think plain-fabric upholstered chairs would have looked good with all the other plain white surfaces in this room (desk, walls and shutters.) I feel like these work since the fabric is more muted. Once I add in some of the tans/beiges/browns that I have planned (throws, tables, baskets, etc…) you may like it better. I like to share the process as it goes since I think that’s the way most of us decorate…in stages. What kind of fabric would you have liked to have seen on the chairs? What would you have chosen, Ann?
I tend to agree with Ann . Both rug and chair are lovely but don’t do anything for each other in my opinion. I agree a solid chair would be too boring, but perhaps a chair with textured upholstery or a tone on tone fabric? Then use a throw and pillows for more texture. All the white presents a challenge, for sure. Introducing a wood table is tricky, too. Eager to see how that all pulls together.
I would like to know what that fabric is, as I am going to reupholster a wing back chair I already have. The colors look perfect, and like you, I love a bird fabric!
Thanks, Dee Ann! I wish I knew. I noticed that the manufacturer answers questions that are left on the chairs at Home Depot. Maybe if you leave a question about the fabric, they’ll be able to answer.
Love the chair fabric. Love the table and the color is perfect with the rug.
VERY cool floor lamp. (So modern for you!) I h ave never been a big fan of mixed patterns so I’d suggest keeping accessories plain, and when you add your future table lamp keep it simple to break up all the patterns going on. That’s my unsolicited thoughts, anyway.
Thanks, Michele! I know, I think that’s why I don’t care for lamp so much. I like the lamp, but it just didn’t work in the Georgia house. That’s why it’s been the basement for two years. lol I won’t use it here fulltime, it’s just temporary until I find a lamp for the table that I hope will go between the chairs. The lamp looks better in this room, than it did in the Georgia house, though. Yeah, it would be a patterned lamp since that would be too much with the chairs.
I believe a small drop leaf table would look nice between two chairs or a small pie crust table. Can you tell I have both in my house? In my opinion multiple patterns are fine as long as the pieces have complimentary colors. Everything is coming together!
Thanks, and thanks for that suggestion, Maryann. I’m worried the table I bought will be a bit too tall, so whatever I use, it has to not be too tall since these chair are not very tall.
Beautiful!!
Wendy
The chair bridges all the colors, it goes very well with all. Another chair will reinforce the look. Enjoy!
As a suggestion for the table, have you considered looking at Ebay offerings with name brand furniture. The furniture can be top quality at reasonable prices. Some will need a trip to a furniture repair but the results are fantastic. I’ve done this many times and have always been very satisfied with the results. Top quality.
I can never find what I want on eBay. I don’t want dark brown furniture in my office and I already have plenty of furniture for my living room, master bedroom, and guest room if I ever move here. The only rooms I’m furnishing are my office, and a table/chairs for the dining room, which I’ve recently done. Also, when I do see something interesting on eBay, the shipping prices are insane or it’s local pickup only. I really don’t want to buy much for this house since I’ll have tons of furniture to bring with me from, if I do decide to move here. If I don’t move here, then maybe in a year or two, I will start buying more furniture. The office is just about done with the additon of these pieces. I probably add much else, if anything. Linda, not sure if you saw this post, but it explains things a little more: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/when-am-i-selling-my-home-moving-answering-all-your-questions/
Another thing to keep in mind is I’m super picky. Two chairs and the table were only around $680…that’s for two chairs and the table. I would never find chairs covered in a fabric I love that is exactly what I envisioned for the office, on eBay. And I doubt I could find this table on eBay. It love its design, just not sure if the stain/finish will work in this room. Also, if something arrives and I hate it, I can easily return it, have it picked up right from my door. You can’t do that with eBay sellers.
I love that chair with the soft colors and birds. I like the floor lamp. Normally, don’t like mixing patterns, but the chair is a muted soft color and right now matches the blue in front of it. There is no conflict. The room is coming together nicely. Are there two doors and more storage behind it ? I would so love all the shelves and storage places you have- and that pantry!
Thanks, Myrna! Yeah, those little doors are all over this house, every eave has them. There’s another set of door on the other side of the office, just like the set behind the chair. They are also in the hall just outside the office, in the master bedroom and pretty much anywhere they could a find a spot to fit them in. I call them elf doors. lol
“JACKPOT!!!!” franki
I LOVE the chair and the pattern in the fabric and the muted, aged look of it. I like the table you have chosen as well. But for me….I’m not wild about the chair with the rug and I love the rug. Just think maybe a buffalo check or a plaid or even a tone on tone print might not fight with the rug as much. The rug is a bold statement piece. I feel like you might be able to find something a bit better compliment. I hope you are ok with me just being honest…..at the end of the day….it’s what YOU like. So enjoy it fully!
Thanks for that suggestion, Toni. It really is a pretty fabric. I finally got a chance to visit Elizabeth Gardens Bird Sanctuary yesterday and it reminded me how much I miss having feeders up.
I love the chair! I’ve been looking for one that is firmer, because I can’t sit in the soft ones very long, hurts my back.
This one is definitely firm. I think it needs a round lumbar pillow or bolster in back for lower back support.
Love the rug but agree with some of the others that the chair does not seem to enhance the room. Just my opinion of course but, although the fabric has many of the colors of the rug, the predominant color seems to be the white background which actually detracts from the rich colors. Something richer may look better in that beautiful room!
I hadn’t thought of that, you could be right. Maybe it will look better when I place a taupe/light brown woven throw (that I have in Georgia) across it. That’s what I had envisioned but unfortunately, it’s back in Georgia right now. Thanks for that perspective, Lee!
Hi Susan,
Love the Doll House! Certainly know why you fell in love with it.
As a retired Interior Designer, I am in agreement with the ladies who think you could find a better upholstery option. The chair without the rug is lovely and works. The rug without the chair works well, but the two together not so much. The chair has a lighter, more summery feel while the rug anchors the room with bold design and color. Perhaps a tone on tone pattern in one of the colors of the rug, or a small check in blue and yellow or blue and white would give you the pattern mix you’re looking for.
Love watching the Doll House evolve into your dream house.
Blessings,
Trish
Another retired designer here! Couldn’t agree more with you. The pattern mix isn’t working. All I can picture is a sisal type of rug under that chair.
I like the idea of pulling out some of the taupe/brownish tones in the rug, I had planned to toss a beige/taupe throw across the chair—I thought it was here but I couldn’t find it, so it’s probably back in GA.
Anyway, I just don’t want too much contrast between the chairs and the off-white desk in this room, kinda want them to work well together. Also, I don’t want the chair(s) to be too heavy on the color, blue, since there’s already so much of that color in the rug and walls. The off-white background color probably does make the chairs feel a bit summery, although the brown trees and foliage in the print help tamper that down a bit. I love birds, would love to use a lot of botanical and bird prints in this home whereever possible. Thanks for those suggestions, Trish! Much appreciated!
I enjoy watching the process of how you are putting this house together. It looks very nice. Having said that, you might consider using a bird finial on whatever-lamp-you-end-up-with! A bird finial would tie the chairs and table together. I haven’t done it yet (and may never do it) but sometimes I think it might be fun to have “seasonal” finials – an Easter egg, a Valentine heart, a ghost or pumpkin, etc. My grandkids would get a kick out of it!
That’s a great idea. I bet Susan will now scour the internet for a bird finial. 😀
Love the idea of a bird finial, that would be perfect! Thanks for that suggestion, Nicki!
You can definitely be sure she will find a bird finial if one is to be found! We are teasing you and yet also complimenting you on your tenacious pursuit of always just the exact right thing! Happy looking!
One more thought! What about using the chair(s) in your bedroom….then you would have a lovely seating area in that beautiful fabric? I totally understand why you fell in love with it. I would too! Then you could perhaps find another perfect chair for the office.
I think they will be fine once I have the case pieces in place and add a throw. If they don’t, they weren’t expensive so I can always replace them later if I don’t like them, but I think I’m going to like them. The second chair arrives on Saturday, but the table won’t arrive until the 11th. I may even buy a round coffee table to go in front of them, just have to wait and see how I feel about that later. They def wouldn’t work in the master bedroom since the colors in my summer and winter bedding are greens and reds.
