Bringing Home the Tree: Christmas Table Setting

Welcome to the 429th Tablescape Thursday!

After bringing home a tree in the back of their red truck last week for the living room, Mrs. Deer realized she still needed a tree for their screened porch.

For this trip to the tree farm, Mr. Deer decided to drive his new wagon that he had just gotten for Christmas.

This week’s table is a cozy one for two, hope you enjoy!

It was getting dark as Mr. & Mrs. Deer arrived back home.

I spotted this adorable doll house many years ago in DuPre’s, a local antique shop. (You may remember when I mentioned Dupre’s in my post about a Staycation I “took” with a friend. If you ever plan a trip to Atlanta, you’ll find that post here: The Week I Took a Staycation.)

I passed it up that day, but it continued to haunt me. While touring Mt. Vernon with a friend a few days after Christmas, that little yellow doll house kept popping back into my head. I just couldn’t get it out of my mind. As soon as the tour was over, I called DuPre’s and was told it was gone. Waaaa!

Something just told me it was meant to be mine, so I asked if they would contact the dealer to see if it had sold. They did and it turned out that it hadn’t, she had just taken it home after the Christmas holidays. I bought it as soon as I returned home.

It normally lives in the guest room, you can just barely see it there on the trunk in the left side of this picture.

The antique dealer told me her father had built several doll houses for her when she was growing up and she was getting rid of some of them. I don’t know how she brought herself to part with it, but I’m glad she did.

A couple of the windows had wreaths on them, but they were very faded and falling apart. I made new wreaths with some tiny green garland and red ribbon. Mrs. Deer’s green Hunter boots are always here on the porch, ready for a trek through the garden. And there’s their sweet kitty!

This “woody” car has so many cute details…

…including a wreath and a “Merry Christmas” tag on the front grill. If you are in need of a fancy wagon like Mr. Deer’s, you’ll find it here: Car with Lit Tree.  I think there are still 2 left. It’s a much prettier green in person than it is in the photo at that link.

The Deers dressed warmly for their trek out to the tree farm, wearing their wooliest sweaters and scarves. 🙂

They added lights to the shrubs around their home for Christmas.

Does this view remind you of anything?

I kept thinking of this pillow I found in Target last year. lol

This is the “setting for two” Mrs. Deer created for their dinner that night. She found the antler napkin rings here: Antler Napkin Rings.

Napkins are from Tuesday Morning, this year, at least I think it was Tuesday Morning. Their plaid edging somewhat mimics the plaid on the dinner plate. Pierced chargers are from Horchow online back in 2008. The cinnamon red flatware is still available here: Red Flatware. It works great for Valentine’s Day and Christmas table settings.

These are Mr. and Mrs. Deer’s favorite dishes for Christmastime since it features their favorite kind of car. You may remember seeing the salad plate in last week’s table, too.

The dinner plate is by Nikko. There’s no pattern name on the back, just says, “Ironstone NIKKO since 1908.”

Merry Christmas to you from the Deer Family! 🙂

Looking forward to the beautiful table settings shared for this week’s Tablescape Thursday!

  1. So lovely, Susan! Probably my favorite of all your Christmas tables….Christine

  2. Oh my word! This is the cutest table ever! I also used my BH&G Heritage Collection woody plates in my tablescape today (yes, I had to go to Walmart and get some after I saw yours), but it’s not nearly as pretty as your table. I’ve always loved your doll house and the reindeer vehicle is great! I love all of it.

  3. Adorable…both setting and story thank you.

  4. That is so stinking cute, Susan!

HOW FUN! Absolutely love the tablescape. Inspired me to get those very cute napkin rings today and I need three more napkins! Thank you for sharing.

  8. You outdo yourself each week, this is wonderful! Thanks for another great party.

  9. Darlene Gardner says

Susan, this table has outdone them all! And that is saying a lot! What a marvelous idea to use the dollhouse and the woody car together. I really love this. I got a red truck from Hobby Lobby and I am using it on my dining room table with the Better Homes and Gardens plates from last year and some little deer ornaments and scattered trees.

  10. Susan,

I just love those plates with the red station wagon! So cute and festive.

As always, thanks for hosting! And happy holidays to you and yours!

You have the beginnings of a photo Christmas story book for your grandchildren, and could do it easily thru Snapfish or one of the photo companies. Julie W

  13. Cynthia Lambert says

    Wonderful. Lots of nice touches.

  14. Oh Susan….the things you do for my imagination. Thanks.

  15. Oh Susan what a delightful post, I love it.
While shopping at Walmart I found the woody salad plates and they also had the salt and pepper shakers. I just love that set of dishes from Walmart.

Love rain deers and their little truck.

    Thanks so much for sharing.

Wishing you a wonderful Holiday Season

    • So glad you got some before they all disappear. Hope they bring that design back again next. I just may collect a few more if they do.
Thanks, Mary! Hope your Christmas holiday season is wonderful!

  16. Adorable Susan! Thanks for hosting today!

  17. Linda Page says

  18. Nan, Odessa, De says

    OH, help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where can we buy M & M Deer?

  19. Okay, unless I missed it, the one thing you haven’t told us is where you got dear Mr. and Mrs. Deer. Come on, fess up…..NOW. Ha!

Always love everything you do, Susan!!! Your hard work is enjoyed and very much appreciated.

  20. I swear, the answer to my question right above my question was not there when I posted. Ha!

    Thanks!

  21. Absolutely adorable – love it all Susan !!!!! Merry Christmas !!!!

  22. Susan…We share a fondness for dollhouses; this one you have is a true treasure. Doll houses were my favorite toy from childhood and remain
still today a favorite thing. I should write a book about the one I made for
my daughter for a bicentennial project. Were you around for that? It was
quite a story and she loved and played with it for years. Even the boys in
the neighborhood would ring our door bell, not for her, but to come in and
see the dollhouse, again and again. I still have it and am looking at it now
in my little office. Oh dear, it reminds me I need to go dust it and get it
ready for Santa’s arrival. Thanks for the memories. A most happy Christmas to you and your family.

    • Yup, I was definitely, I had just graduated highschool and was in my first year of college. I would love to pictures of your doll house, Alyce! It sounds amazing, especially could even turn the heads of the little boys in the neighborhood. That’s saying something! This doll house needs a makeover inside, but I just don’t have the time to learn the process or figure out how to do it. I love it, though.

  23. Toys like a doll house make a child use their imagination and also be creative. The entire blog is beautiful. I am slowly getting the decorations up and have to take treats to friends tomorrow, so Have been really pushing to get them ready and packed.

    Have a joyous holiday season

    • Thanks so much, Carol! I’m way behind on my decorations…still have to decorate my tree…so don’t feel bad. We’ll get all done, right? 🙂 Merry Christmas to you!

  24. Susan, this entire post makes me happy. Thanks for that!

  25. Your entire post makes me happy. Thanks for that!

  26. This is so cute on so many levels. You were one smart lady to have DuPre’s call the dealer and ask about that house! I hope your readers take heed of that advice, as most dealers do similar things to keep inventory from looking tired. Love the tartan, and yes, a few of those plates found their way into my stash as well. What can I say? I hang around people who are sometimes a bad influence! Besides, they’re less expensive than most ornaments. 😉

    • Thanks, Rita! I was really hoping she had just tucked it back somewhere after Christmas. So glad no one else bought it while it was still on display. That’s a great point you make about asking, just in case.
lol I’ve been told that before! 😉

  27. Oh Susan, this table is fabulous!!! I LOVE that doll house and see why you HAD to have it! Such a cute story to go with your table!!!! Thanks so much for hosting and MERRY Christmas!!!!

  28. Dawn Maderak says

OMGoodness!! This could possibly be my most favorite table EVER! Such a cute little story….too much to love. Where did you get the cute reindeer?

  29. This is the cutest Susan! I was in HG today and a woman found an old fashioned VW bus with a tree on top and was walking around the store hugging it, she was so happy! Ha, trees on cars are certainly THE thing this year, and yours with the lighted tree and wreath is over the top cute!! LOVE it! Thanks for the party fun!

    • Oh, gosh…that sounds adorable! You’re not kidding…I’ve never seen that “motif” as much as I have this year. I wonder if there will be a rash of folks wanting to buy stationwagons again…maybe they’ll make a comeback! 😉

  30. Pretty soon you’ll be able to come to my house and feel right at home. So far I’ve bought the fun Walmart dishes, now sold out, then came the red truck with camper and this morning one of the last two remaining station wagons.
I also covet your house from DuPre’s. But I have to put the breaks on, at least until my next trip to Marietta. Space is now getting sparse. Monday’s and Thursday’s are my favorite days of the week thanks to your musings and fabulous pictures. I thank you for reminding me of what is really important. Trucks with raindeer and pillows with raindeer. Seeing the deer on the property has taken a whole new meaning.
Oh, did I mention all the tartan plates now in my possession?

    • Thanks, Kem! lol Yes, we have to get those priorities straight! 😉 I wish I lived in the country where I could see them. The only time deer come out of the woods around here is on the rare occasion when it snows. They keep cutting all the trees down so I doubt we have any deer left around here now.

  31. Maureen Orford says

I have never experienced a snowy Christmas….looks so good. Down Under in Australia we are having a heat wave …last week 32C in my home town Toowoomba. Best Wishes to yourself and all your readers. I love everything in your home, just beautiful…..

    • Thanks so much, Maureen! There is one advantage to warm weather at Christmastime. When I was growing up, when I would get a bike for Christmas, I would freeze my tush off trying to learn to ride it in the freezing temps on Christmas day. Mostly the bike would end up just sitting most of winter while I eagerly awaited spring. I just googled 32C it’s almost 90 Fahrenheit! That is hot! Hope things cool down some for you soon. I need to get my son to mail you some of the snow they are supposed to be getting in Ohio later in the week. 🙂

  32. Too adorable! And love the story of the deer’s outing adventure!

  33. Beyond adorable Susan! Now I wish I had not put my Target critters back. I may have to go and see if they still are waiting for me. 🙂

    • Thanks, Pamela! lol I wish I had bought more of them! They had some cute lumberjack and various other figures. I was thinking how cute it would have been to have done an entire tree out of all the little figures.

  34. This made my day even more fun! You do really need to make a story book like was suggested ! Just absolutely loved the whole thing! Merry Christmas to you and thank you for this fun gift today!

  35. I love this! So cute. The car, the truck, the house, the reindeer. Fun! Great post. I would love playing with all this. You are so inspirational. I write this with much gratitude Susan. I hope your Holidays are the best ever. You sure make mine wonderful. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  36. Susan, love love that dollhouse and the narrative you created. Great tablescape. I have collected miniatures for years, but no dollhouse. The teacher next door brought home a big one for her daughter what was used in a classroom. The two halves closed together to make a whole house. She gave it away ! Crushed I tell you. Somewhere my dollhouse awaits.
    Merry Christmas to all.

    • Amazing that she just gave it away. Yes, don’t give up. I was so surprised when I came across this one. You can build your own from kits. A reader who knows about dollhouses told me mine was built from a kit that was then embellished and added onto. I’m not sure I’d have the patience to build my own, though.

  37. Hi Susan Love all the featured tablescapes but this is a favorite for sure. My late husband hand crafted a beautiful Victorian dollhouse for Christmas one year. I too keep it in a guest bedroom and decorate it for Christmas. Love the ideas of a tablescape. Thank you for sharing. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

  38. Dear deer Susan 🙂 What a darling table. My favorite of all! The yellow house is wonderful and your woody car and the red truck are perfect. I would like to live in that yellow house! Your deer couple is adorable and their kitty is a perfect addition on the porch. I love that Mrs. Deer keeps her boots on the porch too. How charming it all is and so full of Christmas spirit. Thank you for sharing such a lovely scene. It gives me the warm fuzzies all over 🙂 xo

  39. Such an adorable table! I’m still kicking myself for passing on the darling vintage flower farm truck at Round Top last spring.

  40. Cecile Macieszko says

    C’est magnifique….j’adore. Félicitations. Cecile

  41. Susan, this is the cutest setting yet . You have a great imagination! How you come up with unique tables is amazing. Love your story behind the dollhouse too. Do you post only on Monday and Thursday? I need to know so I do not miss any

  42. I love how you create stories for Mr. & Mrs. Deer. So whimsical. The Doll House is beautiful! The original owner can rest knowing that it went to a good home and someone who appreciates it.

  43. SO GLAD you got the house, which so looks like the house in your site’s banner. It was meant to be!

  44. And I am kicking myself for giving up a real deal, OLD red metal truck in a move….with moving 8 times, I tend to be kind of merciless with my choices, but always regret at least ONE thing I sell or donate! 🙂 This table is sooo adorable!

  45. Precious! Love everything including the sweet story.

  46. I love the doll house! I have one that I use for serving (Just like Cupcake Julie – http://www.bakerella.com/candyland/). Lovely table!

  47. Oh my goodness. Now you’ve gone and done it Susan. That dollhouse!! I’ve had a dream of having one since I was a little girl. As I got older I would see one, but then convince myself it was silly to for a woman with no daughter to buy one. But I’ve always loved them so………..this is my favorite table of yours ever. And now my quest begins. I will find one and buy it!!

    • Definitely do it! You’ll love it! I don’t think we ever get to old to enjoy a wonderful dollhouse. There are groups off ladies and gents who gather and work on building them together. I attended a meeting once just to see the houses they were building.

  48. Susan, just goes to show girls of all ages love dollhouses. This will be a favorite post for a long time.

  49. Your dollhouse reminds me of the “Christmas Story” house–I enjoyed your posts of your visits there. Maybe put a “leg lamp” ornament in the window? 😉

  50. Such a whimsical table Susan, and do love the accompanying story. Regarding your dollhouse; totally adorable! I have a San Fransican kit that Santa had left me in 1996 which is still in the box (collecting dust) that of which I’ve declared to my children will be my project when I am shipped off to a retirement home some day together with my Dremel Tool and a good supply of glue….. Now how is that for travelling light? -Brenda-

    • Okay, you are not getting shipped off to a retirement home! I’ll hear of no such thing. 🙂 So get out that house, the glue gun and the Dremel, times awasting! 😉

  51. A delightful post; I had fun reading it. I note you hung the wreathes from the dollhouse windows just like at your house. Did the wicker furniture come with the dollhouse? So, so cute and fun. Mrs. Deer is quite clever!

    • It did. 🙂 It’s actually metal, although it looks wicker. It came with the little chair and a planter that I placed under the window on the side porch. I put some Nandina berries in it for now.

  52. Wanda Bradey says

Just received my two vintage cars (to use next year). I purchased off Amazon. It was a purchase priced by supply and demand. It reminded me that when I see something at Sam’s Club I need to purchase. Both sellers had purchased the cars at Sam’s for $34.95 and I foolishly paid WAY more on Amazon. I understand making a profit but guess I fell into the I WANT THEM trap. Lol! I cannot wait to use them. Merry Christmas.

    • Wanda, that was exactly it for me, I wanted them badly enough to pay the price. I do love them and know I’ll use them for many years. 🙂 At least the pricing was better on Amazon than what I saw on eBay. The red truck was going $173 on eBay!
