Big Porch Update: New Wicker-Style Ceiling Fans For The Screened Porch

Welcome to the 902nd Metamorphosis Monday! Happy Monday! A few weeks back, I purchased two new outdoor-rated ceiling fans for the screened porch. The original fans that were installed 16 years ago still worked, but they were covered in rust, and parts of the fans were deteriorating. The fans had also darkened with age, so their general appearance wasn’t the best.  I wish I had thought to take a photo of the fans once they were down, but I didn’t think about that during the installation process. Here’s a photo I shared a few weeks back, in an attempt to show how the rubbery seals around the screws that hold the blades to the arms had deteriorated and rotted away. Some of the rust is visible in that photo, too.

I really liked the wicker design of the blades on the original Hunter fans, but when I ordered the same Hunter fans again, despite the ad showing wicker on one side, when they arrived, the blades no longer had the wicker design. Even the booklet inside the box still showed wicker on one side. Argh! Not sure why Hunter quit making the blades with a wicker design on one side—maybe it was a cost-saving decision. In any case, I returned those fans and purchased two Honeywell fans that had a wicker design on their blades. (Honeywell fan is available here: 52-inch Tropical Outdoor Ceiling Fan with Light.)

I like how wide the blades are. I think they are a little wider than the blades were on the old Hunter fans. The wider blades give the fans a more tropical look. Love that!

I never purchased the light attachment for the old Hunter fans since I never use overhead lighting. These fans came with lights built in, but I don’t plan on ever turning those on unless there’s some special reason I need extra lighting on the porch.

Just my opinion, but the wicker design on these outdoor-rated blades is much prettier than the wicker design was on the Hunter blades. It looks way more like real wicker than the Hunter blades did.

The base for these fans is a little smaller than the base of the Hunter fans. This has turned out to be great timing for the installation of these fans since the painting company I always use for my exterior painting is going to be here in next week to do some touch-up work on one of the decks. They should be able to take care of this while they are here.

Update: The painting was completed, so here’s how that area of the ceiling looks now.

A view from the living room with the new fans in place. Time for a porch party! If you are in need of a new porch fan, you’ll find this Honeywell fan available here: 52-inch Tropical Outdoor Ceiling Fan with Light. I’m very pleased with how quiet and wobble-free they are—a great addition to the porch!

  3. Love the fans!! Would love one for my porch. How easy will they be to clean after pollen season? Do the blades remove easily for cleaning?

    • Thanks, Carol! I wouldn’t remove them to clean because that could cause them to get out of balance if they are on a downrod. Plus, that would be a lot of trouble since each blade is secured with three screws. I always stand on my tall step ladder and run a damp cloth over the top of the blade while supporting it from underneath with my other hand. It only takes me around 4-5 minutes per fan in the spring time once the pollen has passed.

  4. That wicker texture looks so real and perfect for your porch. Another task checked off…busy, busy spring!

    • Thanks, Mia! It really does look so much more like real wicker than the other fans did. Plus, the wicker design has such much depth…just way prettier.
