My October Favorites, Plus How I Decorated The Front Porch For Halloween This Year

My trip to Georgia was a quick one. I was only there for a week, arriving a couple of days before Halloween. I completely forgot to take photos of how I decorated the porch for my trick-or-treaters, but here’s a photo that I screen-captured via the Ring camera to share with a friend earlier that day. The wide-angle lens actually gives us a pretty good view. I should probably share this view whenever I share the porch. lol

This year, I staggered the large lanterns that I normally place on the steps, instead of placing them directly across from each.  Not sure if I’ve done that in the past, but I like the staggered look. Plus, it doesn’t crowd the opening to the porch. Surprisingly, the black and white striped bench cushions are still available in a bunch of different patterns/designs (including the black/white stripe) here: Bench Cushions.

Here’s a closer photo (from a previous year) of the bolster pillows I placed on each bench. They are one of my favorite pillows for Halloween, and I’m pretty sure I found those in either HomeGoods or Marshalls. HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls always have the best holiday pillows for reasonable prices. Love their pillows!

Of course, Mr. Turkey had to make my favorites post this month since he made his debut appearance in a table setting shared a few weeks back. If you need a beautiful, whimsical centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table this year, you’ll find him available here: Spode Turkey Soup Tureen & Centerpiece.

The glue gun that I purchased last month is currently on sale. I really like that it has a built-in stand—so much better than those awkward, foldable wire stands that you see on so many glue guns. You’ll find this glue gun available here: Glue Gun with Stand.

Toward the end of the month, I purchased a second cat window perch for the kittens that I adopted last month. I like this perch so much, I purchased a second one that will be arriving today. I’m moving the first one I purchased to an upstairs window. The kitties seem to like this style the best—probably because it has higher sides that they can lean back against. I think that makes them feel more secure.

You’ll find this window seat/perch available here: Cat Window Perch.

I purchased these awesome solar lights (that I already have in Georgia and in the backyard of the Dollhouse) for the walkway/step that I tripped over last month when I injured my hand. The ones along the Georgia walkway have lasted for several years and I love how they look! They are so pretty, lighting up a walkway! You’ll find these beautiful, long-lasting lights available here: Solar Lights for Garden and Walkway Paths.

So, the guest bath is currently on hold while I look for another painter. The wallpaper hanger I hired to hang the wallpaper in the guest bath, the one who said he could also paint the walls beneath the wallpaper, did a terrible job of preparing the walls. He came recommended for wallpapering by the paint store where I purchased the paint. It’s very difficult to find wallpaper hangers here in the Dayton, Ohio area! When I pointed out the bad-looking areas that he had just painted over without properly sanding them, he proclaimed, “I’m not a professional!”  I guess he meant a professional painter since his main profession is wallpapering.

So, I have to start over and find another painter/wallpaper hanger to correctly prepare the walls in that bathroom. The walls will probably require skimming over now, since the previous poor paint jobs have been primed and painted over now by the painter I hired. In the meantime, since the toilet paper holder was removed from the wall, I purchased this stand to hold the paper in that room for now. It is super sturdy. If that room were not so tiny, I would keep it full-time. I’m tempted to do that anyway since I like the stand so much. You’ll find this stand available here: Standing Toilet Paper Holder.

The night I broke my hand, my grandsons rushed to the refrigerator to pull these adorable animal gel ice packs from their freezer. They come in a set of four, but currently the Unicorn is down in the movie room, I think. My oldest grandson was using it yesterday after bumping into a tree while trying to catch a football they were throwing.

I can’t remember the name of the pink sea creature that comes in this set. My grandson knew it right away and shared the name, but it’s a weird name that I’ve never heard before, so I’ve already forgotten it. Do you recognize it? Seems like the name starts with an A, but I may be remembering incorrectly. Update: I think the pink sea creature is an Axolotl. How can I be this old and I’ve never heard of that creature in my entire life?! lol Anyway, after they pulled out those cute animal icepacks the night I hurt my hand, I purchased some a day or two later to keep in my freezer. I think they are so cute, and I love their soft velvety covers. I used them on my broken hand those first few weeks when heavier, larger ice packs were too big and uncomfortable to use. You’ll find these adorable ice packs here: Cute Animal Ice Packs.

Love this cat carrier I purchased last month! It’s so easy to put the kitties in and out since it opens from the top, as well as from the end. It worked great when I took the girls for their kitty vaccines. You’ll find this awesome cat carrier here: Cat Carrier.

I shared a bunch of the cat goodies that I purchased when I adopted Beatrice and Agatha in another post, so I didn’t include those again in this post. If you’re interested in seeing those, you’ll find them in this post: Opening Up My Heart Again. See you tomorrow for Tablescape Thursday!

According to my niece who has three girls, the axolotl is having a moment of fame complete with stuffed animals and books. I had never heard of the creature before this year but any way to teach children about our world sounds good to me.

    • That is so interesting! I wondered how my oldest grandson immediately knew the name of that creature! I was like, “How did you know that?!” lol I wonder why he’s so well-known right now. Maybe axolotl is in an animated show of some type. I think I read that they live in Japan, but don’t quote me on that.

  2. Of all things, I have to comment on the TP holder. When I downsized to a retirement home, I took my holder with me. It had a round base just like yours. The bathroom here is small and I replaced the one with the round base with square base so I could shove it against the wall! A little thing, but much better!

    • I may have to try a square base at some point. I didn’t like the ones I saw online when I was shopping for one. It would have to be super tiny, or your feet would actually be on the base when sitting in that bathroom. It’s so small!

  3. Lady…you ARE a mover & shaker!! O, my…& TWO holidays coming on…close together. “Baby” that hand, though…of all times!! franki
    ps Striped Cushions Rock!! ❤️

  4. HI Susan. I love your kitties and I love seeing photos of them. Again I say,
they are so fortunate to have you taking such good care of them.
    You’re a Treasure.

    • Thanks so much, Phyllisa. They are just the sweetest things and so loving. They are purr monsters and we are all head over heels in love with them.

Kitties! I’m so glad you decided to get them. Max will never be replaced, but I’ve so pleased you got them!
    Hugz

    • Thanks, Lisa! I think about that a lot, how much I miss him. You’re so right, he could never be replaced. I hope we get to see our furbabies again one day. These two have stolen everyone’s heart around here. They are just so sweet and loving and so playful!

    • How screamingly frustrating about the hanger/painter. Why can’t they (guys) admit that they can’t do something. Kitten pics are too adorable, especially in their nature observatory. Do you still feel right at home when you go between OH/GA? It seems there would be an adjustment period.

Yes I learned about a year ago what that A sea creature is. I was told, told how to properly spell it then forgot all about it till just now reading this. My grand girl told me. So yep, they know things, don’t they???? Your kittens are sooo cute. I think it is awesome they have (shall have) two of those glorious window stands.
Lucky wee kitties!! How is your hand doing?

    • Aww, so cute that she knew about them, too.
It’s better but still hurts when I do things I should do, like try to open a jar or bottle, or try to turn a cap when assembling a cat perch. I try to pay attention and not do things that make it hurt, but it’s easy to forget.

I repeat: the kitties are ADORABLE! I own that identical cat carrier that you have for Maddie and it is wonderful!
Just a suggestion for a painter: ask at your local Loew’s or Home Depot?
Also google: Painters in__________my area. I always do that for Scottsdale, where I live, and it has worked out well for me.

  8. How is it possible that those to kittens can be even cuter today than they were when they first came home with you?! I am so smitten!!!

  9. My hand can’t get a Break. Hmmm a little humor

  10. I just noticed the tail on the adorable wicker cat bed…great for batting. lol I really like your Halloween pillows and stripe cushions. Sorry about the non-painter. That’s quite a situation to deal with. Best to have the prep work done properly so no regrets.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
