Paint Your Porch Ceiling, Haint Blue

When I added a screened porch onto the back of my home five years ago, I was very tempted to paint the ceiling haint blue. For years I had seen homes all over the south with porch ceilings painted a soft, sky blue. I ultimately decided it wouldn't work for my porch because of the gable ceiling. You  may remember this home from our tour of Isle of Hope just outside Savannah Georgia. It's sporting a … [Read more...]

A Booo-ti-ful Setting for Tablescape Thursday

Welcome to the 262nd Tablescape Thursday! My friend, Marie, has six adorable, much loved grandchildren. When they visit her home, they eat at the same table their parents ate at while growing up. Love that! Marie creates the most whimsical, fun table settings for her grandchildren for all the holidays throughout the year. Can you guess which holiday the table is dressed for now? An Autumn Mantel and Fire Screen

It's been a while since I've posted a fall mantel, the last time was late September 2011. I only have one fireplace, thus one mantel in my home and it's in the den, a room with honey-colored judges paneling. (Picture below from last year, just after Christmas.)   Photography is always a bit of a challenge, even with a tripod. The walls just soak up all the light.   This is how … [Read more...]

Duck, Duck Goose

I almost named this post "Goose Dynasty." ;) Recently Bonnie created a beautiful fall tablescape and I couldn't wait until Tablescape Thursday to share it with you.   This table celebrates the beautiful, rich colors of fall.   The centerpiece is a wonderful tureen disguised as a fat, fall goose. Beautiful Front Porch Addition and Garden Oasis

Welcome to the 242nd Metamorphosis Monday! Happy Monday! How was your weekend? It was beautiful weather here and you can definitely tell fall is on its way. Classic, Timeless, Traditional: Decorate For The Fall-Winter Season

I love visiting Mary Carol Garrity's online website for her shop, Nell Hill's. There are always so many beautiful things to see. This made my heart sing! If you have ever wondered if it was okay to mix brass/gold with silver, I think this answers that question once and for all. This is so much more beautiful than if the candlestick lamps had been all matchy matchy in brass.  Picture above and below … [Read more...]

Decorate in White for Fall

It's late summer and the temps are still warm here in the south, but in the evenings there's a hint of fall in the air.   Yesterday I shared a new lamp I had just added to the porch. So, I waited until this morn to take some pics of this 4th of July tablescape.   This morning it was still dark and gloomy out, not exactly the sunny weather we normally have in July. That just means we have to create our own … [Read more...]

Patriotic Punch for the 4th of July

It's monsoon season again here in Georgia. Doesn't Mother Nature know tomorrow is the 4th of July and celebrations are planned? Rain or no rain, the festivities will go on and we will enjoy every minute, even if the sunshine is in liquid form. Speaking of liquids, today I'm sharing an easy to make, red, white and blue patriotic punch. It's perfect for a 4th of July celebration, especially for the kiddos. … [Read more...]

A New Use for Your Old Jeans

I'm trying to keep myself busy these days, it's part of the way I've been coping with Max's passing.  I've been clearing out closets and I came across these old jeans that are very much out of style and ahem, a little too small.  Do you have jeans in your closet like that? A little light bulb went off, something I've been wanting to do in a tablescape for a while.   I cut the back pockets off … [Read more...]

Front Yard Landscape Renovation

Welcome to the 231st Metamorphosis Monday! Before I dive into this week's Met Monday, just wanted to take a second to answer a question I've been getting about the BNOTP newsletter, Postcards from the Porch. I haven't sent one out since Max passed because I just didn't have the energy to create blog posts and put together the newsletter, too. I will be starting it back up soon though, most likely this … [Read more...]

Front Yard Landscape Makeover: The Beginning

Atlanta has a lot of nicknames, Hotlanta and The Big Peach to name a few.  My favorite has always been, the City in the Forest. Apparently, it got that name because when flying into Hartsfield Jackson, Atlanta appears to be nestled down into a forest.  The drought has taken its toll on a lot of trees over the last few years though, so not sure if Atlanta is still living up to its City in the … [Read more...]

4th of July Table for Children

Welcome to the 250th Tablescape Thursday! Marie always sets the cutest children's table for each holiday or event. The one she created for her 6 grandchildren for this year's 4th of July is a delight!   The table has a "star" theme with red and white polka dot star salad plates and blue and white striped salad plates.   An overhead view...   This was the same table Marie … [Read more...]

Decorate a Porch in Victorian Style

Yesterday we saw how Amy completely transformed a little used patio into a fabulous screened in porch.  Today I'm back with another wonderful patio to porch transformation, although this one was done with Victorian flair. Renee, a reader of BNOTP shared some lovely pictures of her porch addition. Is this not enchanting?! The lantern and the lovely silhouette draw you in. I want to follow that path and … [Read more...]

Screened-In Porch Addition: Patio Becomes Screened-In Porch

Welcome to the 230th Metamorphosis Monday! Recently, I received an email from author, Amy Gamet. She shared some exciting news.  Amy's husband had just completed work on their new screened in porch.  In the picture below you can see how the back of their home looked before work had begun. Stars & Stripes Patriotic 4th of July Table Setting

Welcome to the 249th Tablescape Thursday! I'm excited to share another wonderful 4th of July table setting created by my friend, Marie. Marie always sets wonderful tablescapes for each holiday and this fabulous  patriotic setting is in her breakfast area. Marie found this fun dishware on eBay.  So festive for a 4th of July celebration! I've seen the flatware available on sale at Horchow but I found … [Read more...]

Shady Porches, Lazy Hammocks and Tire Swings: A Garden Tour

Last spring, or maybe it was the spring before that...I forget, a friend and I went on a spring garden tour.  Even though it was a garden tour, I couldn't resist snapping a few pictures of some of the wonderful houses we saw along the way. I'm such a sap for a yellow cottage. Love the double peaks, the red chimneys on either end contrasting against the butter-yellow color of the home and of course that … [Read more...]

A Patriotic Porch for the 4th of July

Welcome to the 229th Metamorphosis Monday! When we last visited Marie's beautiful Victorian home, it was decorated for Easter. If you missed that post, you'll find it here: Decorating for Easter A few months before Easter, the porch was decorated with red garland and big red hearts for Valentine's Day.  It was still cold weather and the trees were all bare. Spring is here, actually almost summer … [Read more...]

Table Setting Ideas for a 4th of July Party

Welcome to the 248th Tablescape Thursday! Yesterday I got together for lunch and a little antiquing with my friend, Marie. Today, I'm sharing two of the table settings Marie created for … [Read more...]

You’ve Got Mail: The Shop Around the Corner Bookstore

I was completely enamored by the wonderful children's bookstore in the movie, You've Got Mail.  From your comments on yesterday's post, I could tell you loved Kathleen Kelly's bookstore as much as I did.  I decided this sweet shop deserved its own post since it played such an important part in the movie.   In this view we're looking back toward the entrance. Don't we all wish The Shop Around the … [Read more...]

You’ve Got Mail

A while back I was in the mood for a feel-good movie.  I pulled out the movie, You've Got Mail, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, remember that movie?  I pretty much love any movie with Tom Hanks or Meg Ryan.  You've Got Mail is a 1998 American romantic comedy set in Manhattan (Upper West Side) of New York City. Today I thought I'd take you on a little tour of the wonderful places we get to go in the movie. … [Read more...]

Max

Just wanted to let you know, Max is gone. Thank you so much for all the well wishes and contributions you made in helping him fight cancer.  In the end, the cancer and his failing heart were too much.   I'm devastated and it will take a long time for me to feel close to normal again.  The last few months have been brutal and heart-wrenching. Beach & Nautical Themed Table Settings

Welcome to the 247th Tablescape Thursday! A Waterside Home with Great Beach House Style

I've been obsessing a little about beach homes lately.  I've always wanted to decorate one but since I don't actually own one, that could be a bit tricky. ;)  Did you catch that whole series of HGTV shows on designer, Sarah Richardson's beach cottage recently?  Just google "Sarah Richardson HGTV episodes" and you'll find them.  I didn't get to watch the whole series but I loved how her cottage was … [Read more...]

Welcome to the 227th Metamorphosis Monday! Happy Monday! Hope your weekend was wonderful! Today for Met Monday, I'm sharing a small update out on the porch.  I don't often change things out here since I'm pretty happy with it, as is.  If I make a change something else usually has to leave. A while back I made an update to the small oval table under the Summer Breeze sign.  You may remember, it got … [Read more...]

Two Story Porches: Build a Porch Way Up High

My love for a two-story porch started the day I was on a home tour in Grant Park (Atlanta) and I walked out onto the top porch of this home.  I know the trees kind of look like they are obstructing the view but it didn't feel or look that way on the porch.  Instead, it felt as if we were in this magical place, high above the world.  We could see all the way down the street both ways, as well as … [Read more...]

Dining in a Garden of Lilacs and Wisteria

Welcome to the 246th Tablescape Thursday! Spring arrived in early May for my friend Cornelia, who lives in the beautiful country of Switzerland. Cornelia celebrated by dining in her garden enveloped in the scent of lilacs and wisteria.  The wisteria vine climbing the back of Cornelia's home was just beginning to bloom. I'm always amazed at how big a wisteria vine can get.  It really is … [Read more...]

Three Summer Tablescapes: Patriotic and Nautical Inspired

Welcome to the 245th Tablescape Thursday! There's a Pottery Barn store just a couple miles from my home.  Dangerous, right? A few days ago while out running errands, I stopped in to see what's new for summer. I didn't buy anything, just window shopped that day.  They had three really cute tables set up so I had to snap some cell phone pics for you.  Their displays are always so creative! Death at a Funeral

Several months ago I decided to give Netflix a spin.  One of the first movies Netflix recommended for me was Death at a Funeral.  The movie poster definitely grabs your attention, doesn't it?  You can read a detailed synopsis of the plot for this movie at Wikipedia, but in general, the  Patriarch of a well-to-do British family dies and his son, Daniel (Matthew Macfadyen) has been given the task of planning … [Read more...]

Welcome to the 226th Metamorphosis Monday! Rain, rain go away!  Have you been coping with what seems like endless days of rain?  If so, you're probably about as sick of rain as I am. Pete the Cat, The Whimsical Art of James Dean

Each week when I take Max to Georgia Veterinary Specialist, we wait in the "cat" waiting room until it's time for him to go back for his chemo treatment.  The walls in that area are decorated with some great kitty cat art.  Yesterday, I snapped some pics with my cell phone to share it with you.  I saved my favorite for last. HGTV Smart Home, 2013: Take the Tour!

Have you seen the HGTV 2013 Smart Home?  It's located in Jacksonville, Florida and it's pretty amazing!  Wish I lived close enough to see it in person.  I love techy stuff and this house is loaded with the latest technology to keep things running smoothly, as well as lots of neat safety features.  I'm not sure how I feel about those teeny, tiny windows on the front of the house downstairs, think I would … [Read more...]

Warm Weather Dining on the Porch

Welcome to the 244th Tablescape Thursday! Fill Those Summer Pots and Planters Without Blowing the Budget

This past Sunday I managed to get a little planting done before the rain started back.  Most of the planting took place on the deck off to the right of the porch, the one with the bottle tree.
